in-tank fuel pump advice 200 1984

I replaced my in-tank fuel pump in October after getting stranded along side the highway two hours from home (thats another story). I got the replacement pump from FCP and after installation, noticed a loud humm that didn't sound right, but, I was back on the road again, so I decided that I could get used to it. Well, yesterday, it happened again, only this time diagnosis for the problem was made easier by the lack of "loud humm" Several round trip hikes to the closest gas station with a can of gas (I was near empty) got me going again, but now I would like some advice for locating a good quality replacement. I would rather not repeat this process againg for a while. Thanks in advance.

Did you also replace the hose from the filter sock at the bottom of the sender up to the pump while you had the sending assembly out of the tank?

No, that appeared to be in good shape. I did replace the sock, of course. Since I don't hear that "humming" sound, I'm perty sure that its the electric pump motor.

Be sure to check your connections, maybe an intermittent wiring problem was the original issue?
