142 High Idle- possible leak in master cylinder 140-160

Hi Guys,
My 71 142e has a high idle problem, and I have isolated it to the vacuum line that goes to the brake booster. If I close this line off, the idle returns to normal. Should I attempt a rebuild, or what advice might someone have to offer?

Thanks in advance,
Jeremy

I think a slight leak around the fitting that goes into the booster sometimes is common? Maybe check there, and use some RTV or something to seal it to the booster. MIGHT be the main problem and help a bit, but might not be. Good luck!

It's in the booster, not the master cylinder. (If brake fluid is mysteriously
disappearing it could be both.) There is a guy in California that will
rebuild them for something like $140 but I lost his name and address.
(If someone would put it up here I'd be most grateful - I have at least one
to be done.)

Hi George,
There is no mysterious dissappearing fluid in the master cylinder. Do you think that replacement is out of the question?
Thanks,
Jeremy

The two signs of master cylinder failure are leakage or disappearance of
fluid (leaks/worn seals) and a slowly descending pedal under light pressure
(worn cups). If it passes both of those it is OK and you are wasting time
and money to change it.

George,
Don't hold me to it, but I think it may have been something like
Booster Dewey or Power Brake Exchange.
I called one of them earlier this year for '72 140 booster.
The guy said he could only repair one type (ATE or Girling, can't remember which) not the one I have of course. Can't get the number right now but you should be able to google it.
Maybe you have the one he can fix.

That's Boster Dewey, best to call him as he can only fix the 140 boosters with the single line of crimps on the band.

Yup! It's coming back to me. The single crimp was the style he could fix.
