floppy replacement motorized antenna mast question 700 1991

Finally got a replacement mast for the wife's 745 wagon. This is #4, I think. (Gave it to her as an Xmas goodie with some replacement lenses and a new starter. I hate Xmas. Waited a long long time). Last one ended up at the drive-thru car wash the same week. Just like the previous ones.

Installation was very quick & easy. BUT the antenna kinda flops-this-way-and-that-way-side-to-side-a-couple-of-times as it extends its travel up and then stops in the fully erect position.

I have the sneaking suspicion that there once was a 1"-2" topmost tubular brass fitting that might be missing? I don't remember. Anybody done this recently? Is there a "guide fitting?" or sleeve of some sort to keep from flopping around?

It just doesn't look like it is properly operating.

Can I interest you in a power antenna? I have a couple.

Yes, there's a shim that slides over it, it's probably still on the remains of the old mast.

there is a 'keeper shaft' at the top. It is probably stuck in the old grease. Take it apart again and find it.

Probably the missing tin sleeve but it will usually spit the mast out entirely. Pop the top nut off that tightens down against the body and see if you left it out.
