I've done precisely what you are trying to do. Details on changing permanent DRL headlight switches found in later 940's to allow selectable DRL headlights can be found in this old post.
I would urge you to normally use DRL. That feature didn't get added just to annoy you or to make the lamp manufacturers rich. A driver that notices you will obviously be less likely to run into you. IMHO Volvo "all lights on" DRL is superior to other DRL systems that use front-only lights, dim headlights or front running lights. With those types of systems it's simply too easy to drive after dusk without noticing your full lighting isn't switched on.

Around here the days are short, some days are overcast and gray. I am considering enabling the DRL's on my 1997 965.
Just curious, why do you want your DRLs disabled?

Yes, the little screw at the headlight switch on my '95 960 is a convenient feature. Unfortunately, the 940 has no such thing. On my '95 940 has no such screw. In fact, when the 940 was purchased new, I told the dealer that I didn't want the "always on" headlights, which I believe were first introduced for the '95 US model. The dealer fixed it when the car was new, telling me that they had to replace the headlight switch.
I requested, and they gave me the original factory-installed switch which I kept (just in case I ever needed it). So, it appears that a new switch might be the easiest thing, which you may be able to buy from a Volvo dealer. Or, perhaps a pre-'95 from a salvage yard will work OK.

Mine is a 1997 965, and thus may not be the same as your 940.
On the panel where the headlight switch is, look at the lower right corner. If there is a flat head slotted screw head there, that is the DRL on-off control.
The screw head is about 3/16-inch dia, and hard to see. Look close.
With your small screwdriver, push in and turn. I don't remember which way to go, but it will be easy to figure out. If the slot is vertical, make it horizontal, or vice versa.
Good Luck,
Bob

Sorry, I know it can be done, but might require some wire cutting and a transplanted switch. I hate them. Overly redundant. I almost always leave mine on because volvo wired the car to shut them off when you shut off the car.
If you've ever driven up to a military checkpoint, you know that they want you to turn off the headlights, or they shoot.

".....might require some wire cutting and a transplanted switch."
FYI, no wiring work was needed to replace the "always on" switch with the "real" one on my '95 940. In this case, the fix is very simple. First, remove the kick panel above the driver's knee area. Before removing the switch control knob, note which position is facing upward, so you can install it correctly when re-assembling. Pop off the switch control knob. Its on pretty tight so be careful not to break the plastic.
Note: a metal bit may come loose from inside the switch. The metal bit is a D-shaped piece designed to hold the control knob securely to the stem of the headlight switch. After the control knob is off, unscrew the headlight switch stem from the instrument panel, take out the switch from underneath the panel. Then, unplug one switch and plug in the other one.
When re-assembling, the final step is to press the control knob back onto the stem of the headlight switch, making sure that the knob is pointing in the correct direction.
