Parking/Emergency Brake Use 200

Whether you call it a “parking” brake or an “emergency” brake, there is a reason to use it every time.

Here in San Diego, a 3 year-old girl was run over and killed when a 2 year-old sitting in an SUV moved the gearshift out of the park position. The girl was with her grandmother unloading groceries at the rear of the vehicle. The grandmother tried to pull the child out of the way, but was unable.

I saw the accident scene on TV and the driveway where this occurred had but a very slight slope to it.

A lot of people get excited about much more dramatic dangers like criminals and handguns. The reality is cars are much more dangerous because they blend into our everyday life and are not accorded the respect (caution) they should be.

I'm surprised that it was that easy for the girl to knock the car out of Park. Don't all new cars since 1985 or so have an interlock that prevents moving the shift handle out of Park unless the car's ignition is on, and the brake pedal is pressed hard?

If the girl was in the car alone, the ignition shouldn't have even been on, let alone the engine running...

Speaking of which, do you think the new electronic parking brakes that apply automatically when the car is turned off (or at the touch of a button) will improve things? IMHO, it would seem that they could more easily be accidently disengaged than a regular handbrake. Also, doesn't operating the park brake electrically sort of take away the "emergency" aspect of the handbrake since there are more possible modes of failure?
