RadiatorLeak Punched hole 900 1992

1992 960 sedan

Pulling away from Costco and drove over something attached to the ground but covered with snow. It appears I've punched a hole in the bottom of the radiator or what looks like a mini radiator attached to the bottom of the main radiator. Is this a seperate unit from the radiator or am I looking at removing and repairing the entire unit? It's crunched pretty good.

Any thoughts, comments or diagrams would be extremely helpful.

my 92 is not here right now.but i beleive you are refering to the oil cooler, check that you are not loosing oil.my 94 is cooled by coolant hoses, but the 92,i'm sure has the small(oil cooler)radiator you're talking about.

Take a hard look at the air conditioning condenser as well, which sits in front of the radiator and is likewise subject to damage from road debris.

    Dear Kirke,

Good p.m. and may this find you well. Further to Mark's post, you can get replacement radiators at:
    www.fcpgroton.com (Nissens; Made in Denmark)
    www.eeuroparts.com (Nissens; Made in Denmark)
www.bortonvolvo.com (Factory original [Borton's is a Volvo dealer]).

If the hoses have serious time/miles on them, it is worth replacing them. The same applies to the thermostat.

    Hope this helps.

    Yours faithfully,

    spook

There is no mini radiator in that car but I can see how it would look that way when looking from underneath. The late model 900 series cars and all 960 radiators are designed so that they actually go through the lower core support. In the earlier models the radiator sat ontop of the core support and in the later ones it goes through it and sticks out the bottom about 2-3 inches. You need a new radiator. You have a few options available to you but I have always used factory Volvo radiators in the late model stuff in my shop. I have yet to find an aftermarket radiator that is what I consider good enough. If I were to use an aftermarket the first place I would look would be Nissen.

    Good luck,
    Mark
