m41 transforms itself into automatic 140-160 1969

had lived with problem for over a year while in my 69 144.the o.d. would gently
shift into overdrive when two conditions where satisfied 1.normal operating
temperature 2.when rpms where approx. 3500 or higher. this would happen in any gear. also disconnecting wire from solenoid had no effect.now that i'm going to insert this o.d. into my 60 544 which already has a b20 like to have some help resolving this problem while on my bench.
thank you jonhbear

J type OD with those symptoms needs the solenoid cleaned out. Not in the FAQ's.

Contact me via ODGuru at kc dot rr dot com and I'll forward the info.

Even after, a refurbish of the O-rings would make the OD work for a long time in the next auto. AT minimum, the two actuatign piston O-rings which can only be accessed with the OD of the tranny. Best done while tranny out of auto.

700/900 FAQ on this Board is also an excellent source for OD rebuild information.

If it's a J-type it is possibly the o-rings in the solenoid, or even the solenoid itself.

A D-type doesn't have the same type of seals in the solenoid. It is possible that the adjustment of the solenoid on the D-type is off, but unlikely.

My guess is that the all the seals and o-rings are not sealing properly due to age. Has it ever been apart?

You should consider a rebuild before you put it in that 544. If you are somewhat mechanically inclined, you can do it yourself. I checked out an article on vclassics before I did mine. Just take your time and take good notes as you take it apart. I didn't think it was terribly difficult.

You will need a press if you choose to renew the bearings though.
