What's a B230 L (emphasis on the 'L') engine? 200

Hi. I had been doing some reading at another Volvo site regarding B230 engines, and there was a reference to an L engine, as if it was a somewhat different version than the run-of-the-mill ordinary B230 engines. The reference to this engine was that this engine had a unique "piston oiler" -- i.e., an oil passage to squirt more oil at the piston.

Were all engines of a certain (for example, the last) model year of this L type, or was it only included in certain markets? I'd appreciate knowing anything about this L engine, or how to identify it.

Thanks.

Have a look at this engine buildup site for a description of L-block characteristics:

As Dave says, I understand the "L" denotes the piston oilers, and I think I recall a post that cited a marking on the block in addition to the L on the timing belt cover label.

Somehow, I have a hunch that the L block coincides with the advent of the round-toothed timing belt. That would put it at '93, according to the IPD catalog. I know the '93 240 and 940 have that belt, and my 940 has the L on the label. My daughter's 240 lives on the Vineyard, so I can't check the label.

      Good info.... 200

My wife and daughter both have '93 240's (I have an'84), so I'll wait for them to get home to see if they've got a label on the timing belt cover.

I'm hoping the "L" is there, even if they're not turbo'd, just to know that they've receiving the benefits.

I'll let you know -- each is of different ends of the '93 year -- my wife has the early one, without the unusual fuse panel on the positve terminal of the battery, while my daughter has the later version, with the three big fuses on the positive clamp.

      Thanks, guys.

The L block(and crank) also had the thrust bearing moved back to the rear and made 360 degree, istead of 180.

I saw an "L" on the front of a timing belt cover right where the "K" is on 88-89 engines. It was on a '93 940 turbo which was the first year to get the oilers so you're probably right on. It was here in the US at a pick and pull up in LA a couple of years ago. I've heard these engines are popular for turbo build ups because of the oilers carry away excess heat.

They're also supposedly the one variation of B230 that doesn't have piston slap reminiscent of a diesel on startup. Can't vouch for that personally though.

Quiet? Ooh... That just wouldn't seem right somehow for a B230. How do you know it's running? Heck, you can keep it!

          Must be nice though.
