Clutch engagement for air 200 1992

I was doing some routine maintenance the other day under the hood and I decided to check the air conditioning. I bought the car in Oct 05, so no need to even turn it on and only did so now as a matter of making sure it was working correctly.

While being under the hood and using the throttle linkage for rev's, I watched the clutch on the compressor and it would click and try to engage and would do so for about 2-3 secoonds and stop, then do the same thing..click, try to engage for about 2-3 seconds and stop.

It looks as though it is trying to engage itself and then stops.

Any tips would be appreciated

Thanks
Frank

That compressor normally cycles when it runs. It may be that 2-3 seconds per cycle is normal when it is cold outside. If I had an A/C that actually worked, I could test that theory.

The low refrigerant is more likely the case.
