can I use a B230F engine from a 940 in my 240 ? 200 1993

The 240 is a great car, except for the times when your girlfriend drives it at nearly full speed, for a few hours, in "2" instead of "Drive" on the auto gearbox! ...so now I need a new engine.

Anyway, here's my question: can I use a B230F engine coming from a 940 (and having its distribution rotor at the rear of the engine) instead of my original B230F, with the standard distribution rotor in front ? It's obvious that I'll have to take out the 940 rotor (it would press hard against the firewall in a 240), but can I use my old one instead ? The engine block has a cover -which could be taken out- over the place where the distributor would come. But will I find the same type of crankshaft in the 940 B230F as in my old 240 ? I never opened my engine, but I'm sure my crankshaft has some kind of gear that moves the distributor axle. I don't know if I'll find the same crankshaft in the 940 engine, so I'm not sure if I can do the engine switch.
Could anyone please advise me on this ?

I'll try to attach an explanatory picture - not sure this will work.

Many thanks in advance,
Neil

We had a 1988 244 with a B230 engine with the distributor at the rear end of the cyl head. Depending on the year of your 244, I think the 940 engine should go in there, despite the location of the distributor. Keep on asking here.

Have you changed the rotor/Dizzy cap on it? It's not soooo bad on the 740, but I'd be surprised if you could do it at all in a 240.

Thanks for your message; my 240 is a swedish spec (larger heating fan on the other side of the firewall) and unfortunately the distributor won't fit.

I have dissambled about ten B230 engines from 700/900 series cars. No engine had the distributor gear cut on the intermediate shaft.

If you want to use the 900 series B230F engine in your car, you need to plan on changing the intermediate shaft. You'll need to remove the oil pan and oil pump drive gear to do that.

Thanks; I'll check if the crankshaft assembly on my blown engine is still ok and maybe use it.

Neil.

The crankshaft will be identical between 240 and 740 versions of the B230. You will need the intermediate shaft from the 240 version of a B230.

It depends. I've seen some with the drive sitting there to be used, and the block is tapped. Others don't. You'll have to look.

Regards

Pete
