AW70 Tranny Balls 700 1988

In a bit of a spot here. Mistakenly removed lower valve body "large dog leg cover" and later discovered three 5.5mm plastic balls & one 0.245 inch plastic ball in my catch basin along w/ a 0.078" x 0.218" long pin. I believe the later may be trash from some past activity - please advise. The BIG problem is where do they go & are there only four in the lower valve body? I see what appears to be several chamfered holes but don't really want to guess at their location - CAN ANYONE HELP? This is all happening under the car, 1988 740 GLE, nonturbo, 8-valve w/ new headgasket. The reason I'm in here is that I found water (milky fluid in trany)w/ kickdown cable binding. Found a great write-up but unfortunately did not define location for these LOWER VALVE BODY balls.

Toni: do you still have that piece of paper indicating where the balls go? As you say TP 31642/1 service manual oddly enough does talk about these balls.

THANKS for any help you can provide - even correct count of balls for the lower valve body would help. I see there are four balls in the upper valve body - don't have this apart yet & w/o gaskets probably won't go there even though I'd like to check that 1st to 2nd shift ball diameter.

Latest: I find a place for the larger ball and four places for the smaller 5.5 mm blue balls in the upper side of the lower valve body "PLATE" as indicated by small chamfers. Can't find another ball for the life of me; so now in this quantry of whether this thing takes five balls or four & where they go. Does anybody know how many BALLS go into the LOWER VALVE BODY of an Aisin-Warner AW70 transmission? Getting desperate in PA!!!

      John,

Thanks for responding, but that picture is of the UPPER VALVE BODY - that I haven't removed from the transmission yet. The one I need info on is the LOWER VALVE BODY - under a different bolted steel plate & aluminum cover.

    XKE,

I'm looking at the 240 manual for the AW70 (TP30868/1). It shows four 5.5mm balls in the lower valve body.

Orient the lower cover with the short edge to the top, and where the dogleg cover attaches toward the top.

One ball drops into the square hole next to the middle of the three screw holes used to hold the upper edge of the dog-leg cover in place. Note that the ball can cover a gap in the right wall of that hole.

Now go to the left of that middle-screw hole and follow that short channel downward to its end. The second ball drops into the square hole on the other side of wall you just touched. The ball can cover a gap in the right wall of that hole.

Now go left and down slightly to a screw hole and beyond it to a rectangular hole that also has a gap in its left wall. That's the home for ball three, and ball four goes in a similar rectangular hole to the left of that one. The gap in that hole is in its right wall.

    Hope that helps.

PS: I seem to remember that one of these balls wears down over time, and that results in delayed/abrupt upshifts. If that is true, this looks like a chance to replace that smaller ball with a new one.

      JD,

Many thanks for your help - your message reads well looking up from under the car and is correct for AT's in 240's from 1985 to 1992 & 740's from 1985 to 1991. Now all I have to do is figure out which square hole gets the bigger 6.2 mm brown ball. The first ball position you described has no large hole through the steel plate, where it would seat by gravity as others do; only a pin hole beside where this hole might have been. Decided to put the bigger ball in your 2nd hole since the pin hole beside this is slightly larger than that beside the first. Thanks again for your help. It appears now the only mistake I can make is putting the larger ball in the wrong place. Originally found four balls in catch basin: three 5.5 mm blue balls & one 6.2 mm brown ball.

267,000 miles on this 1988 740 GLE, just installed new head gasket & valve stem rubber dampners - much quieter. I was surprised to find all valve clearances within cold spec: 0.014 to 0.016" w/ bores still showing 45 degree hone markings. Got its fourth water pump, new timing belt, idler bearing, head bolts. Hopefully AT will be O.K. after flushing with new fluid - new radiator on the way. Just installed new transmission kick-down cable as original was binding from rust over 2/3's it upper length & causing late shifting. Used two heavy pieces of cardboard as spacers to quiet heater fan that was just touching shroud at top. My daughter uses this car now living in Indianapolis - perhaps she'll be able to go home soon.

Good. My manual showing four 5.5mm balls was written 2 years before your car was built, so maybe one of the ball's sizes was changed after it was published. One 6.3mm ball is used elsewhere in the transmission, so that is a standard size.

You were right to ignore my 1-2 shifting comments. They were based on my not noticing that one ball is larger rather than smaller than the other three; in any case, the location of the ball I was talking about replacing is indeed on the far side of the plate you are hoping not to remove.

At least I think so; I've not been in there yet.

          JD,

Had to flush w/ 23 gts to run nearly clean fluid after months of driving w/ leaking transmission cooler in radiator(really milky but still viscous). Installed new radiator & flushed via top return @ radiator w/ 3/8" ID clear tubing. Apparently, kick-down cable rusted from excessive moisture that had vaprorized. Just wanted to thank you again for taking the time to tell me where those balls went - shifts smartly now. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

          Regards,
          Bob

P.S. Thannks to you & my persistence, my daughter is scheduled for return to Indy on Friday (485 mi) in what I call the bullet, 267,000 miles, headliner sagging, great engine upon inspection, AT just went thru hell, fine now.

It's all back together now. I'll let you know how it all works after I receive/install the new radiator & thoroughly flush the transmission. The 1st/2nd shift ball in the upper body will have to wait until maybe I pull the transmision to replace the rear seal that been leaking for the last 100,000 miles. THANKS AGAIN FOR YOUR MUCH NEEDED HELP.
