1986 240 Wagon Belt Squeal

Good day all-

I had a new timing belt installed at a Volvo dealer about a year ago and they replaced one of the drive belts at that time.

For the last month whenever I accelerate hard, or sometimes when I just let the clutch out, there is a horrible squeal from the engine compartment.

My 240 is kept in a garage and is a daily driver. The only thing different lately is we have had non-stop almost record-breaking rainfall this winter. I wonder if the damp has something to do with it.

Has anyone else had this problem?

Thanks for your help...

    1986 240 Wagon Belt Squeal

    Hi,

The dampness could be a factor--old belts could be glazed and /or out of adjustment.

That said, I had a similar problem on son's 91 240 recently--belt squeal on start up. Wouldn't go away, even with new belts and adjusting them to spec.

Turned out to be the harmonic balancer. The HB is a two-piece pulley that has a rubber isolator between halves; it fails right there. To check it, paint a white stripe across the two pulley halves (from inner to outer). If it's bad, after start-up (and squealing) the stripe won't line up anymore. There are some good tips on this in the 740 FAQ--under "timing belt" if I remember (not always a sure thing at my age) ;^)

    Hope this helps.

    Best regards,

    Steve A-
