Car cutting off. 200 1992

Hello: Since I've owned my 240 it has cut off while driving, I don't know if this is the same as stalling, only four times. I read some other posts, but I am not sure what to do. The first time it was cold and I was driving as if it wasn't. When it cut off, I knew what it was and then it restarted right away and I took it slower. The next time was about two months latter. I was driving on a warm day; I had been driving for 30 minutes. I was approaching a red light and all the service panel light came on and the car stopped running. I restarted it and it turned over right away. Time number three and four were yesterday, I was driving for about 10 minutes. The temp indicator had me well with in the normal range. I have a 1/2 tank of gas. The car shut of while driving I may have been accelerating slightly. Scared, I drove to a gas station. I got gas, I actually purchased high-octane gas this time, and I restarted it. And it cut right off. Then, waited a minute, cut the radio off, which controls an amp installed a month ago. I figured anything could help. The car started. The engine sounded normal.

In August I did the dealers 150K service new Timing belt, plugs, fluids, filters (I think the fuel Filter), oil/filter change, a drained transmission, and more stuff I can't remember now. In November replaced to O2 sensor. Starter in December (Same month as the second cut off).

I am not sure where to start. Could this be a fuse or a relay? Or am I looking at spending a huge amount of money?

    Car cutting off. 200 1992

    Hello:

Your problem is electrical for sure, the question is exactly where. A simple (but not infallible) test is to start the car, then wiggle the RPM sensor wire at the back of the motor on top of the bellhousing to see if wiggling it causes the car to stall. If so, you've located your culprit-- a part that is $29 at FCPgroton.com and not terribly difficult to replace. Other candidates are FI relay (resolder or replace @ ~$20), the power stage ($39 in aftermarket) or the radio suppression relay. All these parts are plug-n-play and don't require more than a screwdriver to replace.

Sometimes it is cheaper to replace than to diagnose, especially if you have to throw a towing bill into the mix. For example, you can get the FI relay, the RPM Sensor and an aftermarket ignition amplifier for $88 plus shipping from FCPgroton.com. The independent mechanics in my area get $75-85/hr, and a tow is $80 minimum.

My money would be on the RPM sensor or the power stage. Let us know what you find.

    Good luck!

    1) without a doubt I would replace the fuel injection relay. had a similar experience, and replacing that unit solved the problem.

    2) check, clean, and grease fuses & fuse box
