Another timing belt install question 200 1986

Tomorrow I will be doing my first timing belt installation. I have read everything I could get my hands on and feel I'm ready. I got my belt from FCP Groton and the belt they sent my is made by Roulunds Denmark and is a RO-DRIVE
stamped on the belt. I was surprised to see only 2 white marks not 3 on the outside of the belt. The other issue is that the original 2 marks look like they were blacked out with a black sharpie marker and new white line hand marked about 1/2 inch away from where the original ones were. Should I try to install this belt and if so, where do I line up the only 2 lines I have available?

Thanks in advance.

Another timing belt install question 200 1986

hi there.
after you do 2 or 3 belts you dont even worry about the lines, as they dont really mean anything. (but nice the first time)
the intermediate sproket is the most difficult for me to see the marks, so i use a small allen wrench or screwdriver held in sproket groove to line up the mark on the sproket to the mark on the metal backing plate, or use a mirror.
if you get everything lined up to TDC before you remove the belt you can use the rotor alignment orientation under the distributer cap as a reference for the intermediate sproket position.
it helps me to use white out on the crank pulley alignment marks.
check your tensioner for wear.
if you have any looseness on the belt make sure its on the tensioner side.
thats my experience.
good luck
mike

The marks on the belt are a "nice to have" not a "must have". The 3 sprockets the belt goes around have marks in the metal that match marks on the cover. Be careful with the center sprocket that goes to the distributor. It moves very easy (can get out of alignment) the others are more stable. The belt should be fine, just replace sooner if you are worried about its quality.
