I want my turbo back!! and overdrive fuse blew twice in 2 weeks 700 1986

I had a horrendous oil leak from the turbo drain tube and took it to a Indy who replaced the gasket at the top of the tube and the o-ring. The leak has been repaired. However, since I got the car back I've noticed that when I stomp on the accelerator (as I do occasionally) the turbo needle (which used to jump instantly into the yellow area at about twelve 11 o'clock and climb steadily to 12 and 1'oclock (when I am really late) now barely gets into the yellow area of the gauge. There still is sufficient torque to move out in traffic, but the turbo just seems labored and I have yet to get it to the 12 o'clock position (and I really tried this morning). Any ideas or is my turbo just starting to get tired. I use Mobil1 and have used it since acquiring the vehicle about 2 years ago, oil changes every 5000, had catalytic converted and exhaust system replaced a year ago, and I cleaned the throttle body manually about 4 months ago (it was very dirty). Last night I did the Seafoam thing and the idle improved slightly, acceleration is as smooth as ever, but I WANT MY TURBO BACK!!!

Also, in the last two weeks my #12 fuse blew which also affects overdrive (and backup lights on the 86 740). Any ideas where to start on that one too?

Yes, grab the wastegate actuator (cold) and see if it is loose. They can cock back, holding the gate partially open and that will do it.

When the boost gauge is to the left of 12 o'clock it's measuring manifold vacuum and when in the yellow region to the right it's indicating turbo pressure. Maybe take the turbo output hose off and spin it with your finger. It should be easy to turn. Also check if the mechanic accidentally disconnected the waste gate rod or any vacuum hoses or tubes. Sounds like you have an electrical short in the overdrive circuit. I've read where a bad transmission mount can cause chafing of the overdrive solenoid wires. You may have to crawl under the car. The wires from the switch also can bend and break and my be shorted out inside the center console.

I took the vehicle back to the indy shop who did the initial repair on the turbo drain pipe, and they test drove it and reported that I may have become accustomed to seeing the turbo needle higher than it should be because the wastegate was also cleaned while the car was in their shop. So as not to be presumptuous, let's say I'm cruising along at 50mph and decide to pass a 18-wheeler who is doing about 65, so I step on it to increase my speed to 75mph. is it likely that my turbo needle would approach 12 o'clock on the gauge? I clearly recall, prior to taking the car in, that whenever I accelerated quickly the turbo needle would go to 12 o'clock almost instantly, and as my acceleration increased it would climb to almost 12:30 until/unless I let up off the pedal. So is it expected that on hard acceleration that the turbo needle go into the yellow area, or is it really the usual that the turbo just barely go into the yellow area upon hard acceleration?

        Wastegate was cleaned??
Can't say I've heard that one before. I could see replacing the actuator hose or reinstalling a missing clip from the actuator rod to the wastegate, either of those could change (reduce) the amount of boost on tap - ie, from uncontrolled overboost back to what it should be. BUT if you were driving around with no boost control you'd have had the overboost switch cutting off fuel supply every time you accelerated hard... Cleaning the wastegate can only consist of spraying the thing down with brake-clean. The actuator itself is non serviceable, if the diaphragm is ruptured it gets replaced. Period. Shouldn't make any difference to boost level.
