Maximum depth for front door speakers 200

From what I have found in the search the 93 240s has 5 1/4 inch front door speakers. I have been looking at Crutchfield and all the 5 1/4s seem to need at least 2 1/4 inches mounting depth. From measuring the depth of Volvo 4 inch speakers, and the hole in the door I figure you might have 1 5/8 inches maximum depth.

So is the OEM 5 1/4 inch speaker shallower than aftermarket speakers or do they use a spacer? Even most of the better 4 inch speakers seem to need 1 5/8 inch depths. Should I replace the 5 1/4 inch OEM speaker with a 4 inch speaker?

Sorry I know this has been rehashed many times but there are so many different speakers. It would be great if the 240 forum had section with instructions for commonly asked questions like this.

Maximum depth for front door speakers 200

My experience is w/ a 1988 245 but I don't think the door designed changed. The " best" speaker I was able to install was a 4" Infinity Reference, I don't recall the depth. I surmise that IF the 5.25" is a factory speaker it was specially built to a lesser depth OR it was mounted using spacers. I think the 90's 240's I have seen have different grills from mine and this may be to accomodate the bigger, deeper speakers. Only supposition. I think we all have to come to terms with the fact that 200 series Volvos are not speaker-friendly and were designed in the early 70's when an AM radio and single speaker in the center of the dash was all that was expected. I have not tried it but the grill in the center of the dash may be a good place to install an oval bass speaker.

Thanks for the info. I think I will wait on the speakers. I have tried using the center dash for a larger speaker. I used an Infinity speaker. It sounded great, but it did not like the heat/sun, and there were wiper arm/magnet clearance issues.

I would like to toss my hat into the 4" infinity ring. I couldn't reccomend them more. It seems like speakers are marketed to only those who want unhealthy ammounts of bass a little tremble and nothing in between. The 4" infinity reference produce amazing sound for the price.
With the first setup I installed some old Pioneer speakers in the front with the windows down. I learned my lesson when it started to rain later that night. I'm pretty sure the specs for the depth were <2" but you get a little extra space with the mounting ring.

I agree, clearance is an issue. If you want to go bigger, custom spacers would probably be the way. If best sound is the objective, I would think about using 4" in the front door with a crossover to eliminate lower frequencies, and put 6.5" rounds in the back shelf. Forget about the center, there isn't really anything to be gained there.
