940 Turbo woes..... 900 1994

I'm starting a new thread in hopes someone has seen this latest symptom before.
150k miles well maintained, just passed emissions with flying colors. Oil changes at 3k etc. Will start and run fine while the engine is cold. Once it warms up, and the outside air is cold, say below 40 it sputters at idle, skips misses and stalls on acceleration, but once its moving it runs ok. It will run fine on the highway but stop and go driving is getting dangerous. Any help would be appreciated. To date I have changed and or checked the following: AMM,
Hose from turbo to AMM, Ignition Amp, Coolant temp sensor, vacuum lines, intercooler lines, throttle body, idle air valve, distributor cap and rotor, fuel pump operation, fuel pump relay, fuel filter, pvc hoses and holder, no flame trap. This morning once I got it going again it sputtered and backfired through the intake, after stalling out on take off, again after reaching normal operating temp. Please Help!!!!
Thanks...

Hi I have a 945T and I changed the Radio Suppression Relay to cure a similar fault. Details of the relay are in "700/900 FAQ". The relay is not expensive, and is fitted ahead of the drivers side suspension turret just below the loom.

PS there were no ECU codes showing with the Radio Suppression relay faulty.

just another thought....... i once had similar conditions.....turned out to be a hair line crack in the exhaust manifold. crack was closed when engine cold.......opened enough when warm to cause all kinds of running havoc

Sounds a lot like rich mixture due to:

    -intake hose leak
    -coolant temp sensor malfunctioning
    -fuel pressure regulator faulty

I suspect the first. Check real hard for leaky piping in your intake system.

my wifes '91 945 T just went through very similar circumstances, the
inital thought was RPM sensor, so I ordered one. It was getting worse &
I happened to have a fuel pump on hand & had the fuel connector tube between
pump & filter. I got a NAPA filter and installed the new pump/filter/connecting
tube on garage floor. has been running normally since for last 2 weeks now,
the RPM sensor finally came in so I put it in for PM.,

FYI - the "electricfil" rpm sensor brand is OE, the original old sensor
i pulled off had same "EF" stamping on plastic head as replacement as
    supplied by F.C.P.

my money is on the fuel pump !

I am interested because I have VERY similar symptoms, though mine is on an n/a Regina 740.

I hope my problem is not the fuel pump since mine is more expensive and harder to get to than the Bosch main pump. But I have to ask this question. How would the fuel pump function be related to how warmed up the engine is? If it were a fuel pressure question, I would expect it to run worse when the engine is cold and needs the most fuel.

Did you do a fuel pressure and fuel volume test? Mine had borderline pressure and would show up as a problem only at acceleration.

    Hello Chuck:

Is the car setting any codes?

I have seen similar symptoms with a bad RPM sensor-- what does the tach do when it starts to sputter?

Have you run the OBD stuff in diagnostic mode, as per the 700/900FAQ?

These things are frustrating, but eventually you are going to have a Eureka moment-- good luck!

Hi and thanks for the reply. No codes are set. The tach seems to follow the engine, it bounces up and down with the sputtering, and seems to drop off with the stall, not before. I'll have to look into the diagnostic mode, I missed that when I was going through that.
      Thanks Again.

Hello, I just had one in the shop with the same symtoms. I looked all over for a vacuum leak and couldn't find one. Then I did a pressure test on the turbo piping. I found a small hole in the hose that went from the turbo to the intercooler at the bottom of the hose 1 inch from the intercooler. It had blown a small flap of rubber so that when it was idling it would not leak, but get it on the road and same problem. Good luck.

Also check for proper operation of the check valve on the line from the intake to the brake booster, and for vacuum leaks where the valve enters the brake booster. My 944T was dying when I braked heavily or even slowed down sometimes, and I had to "help" the grommet on the check valve out with some RTV sealant.
