Rear wheel bearing. Is it suppose to come apart when you pull the axle? 87-740.

Hey board,
I pulled mine. The bearings are on the shaft, but the race stayed in the axle.
does that mean its broken. Or is that the way its designed? There bearings look fine otherwise.

Thanks.

S.

That's the way it's supposed to be. The bearing it to be packed with wheel bearing grease when you reinstall it. If it was full of gear oil when you removed it, then the inner seal is bad and has let the gear oil wash out the grease.
When relubing these I use a grease gun with synthetic grease and a needle injector to fill up the bearing. It is really hard to get it packed well by hand. You can slide the outer seal and retainer away from the bearing after you clean the axle between the flange and the seal well. The race will slide out of the housing so you can clean it up also.
You can get by without replacing the inner seal in a pinch, but it will eventually wash the grease out again so it's best to get a new seal in there.
Good luck,rcs
