This applies to 700's and 900's.
Could Brickboard sell a copy of the 700/900 FAQ?
We all like brickboard, right? We get free advice, we can find parts, we have all sorts of benefits. All of us (should) use the FAQ too. I am interested in buying a copy of it on CD for like ... 10$ or so. Maybe more, maybe less. I think this would be a very cool idea as we would have a permanent copy of a webpage that might not be around forever - and this might help with that.
Opinions?

That would be nice, but a lot of the info for 700-900 can be used for the 240 series....
The more common things like water pump, timing belt, other "red block" work etc etc is essentially the same.
I guess you can find some things on the 140 and earlier models that are quite dissimilar like mechanical fuel pumps, non-disc brakes, 6 volt system, etc etc..? But doing most work is very similar; isn´t it mainly that specs as for wear, volumes etc are quite different? The earlier models don´t have all the electrical/electronic gadgetry, they are just more naked versions of our 700-900s. Wouldn´t it be nice with postings, if that is possible for copyright reasons, of things like circuitry diagrams for the earlier models as a start?

There is a 240 FAQ: Bob Scheer's version from the mid-90s, now on my hard drive. It needs updating, a lot of work. Anybody interested?

After doing a little testing,I created a CD with the html files. Using this with a browser preserves all the links and is faster than Adobe Reader. Any CD for sale should have an auto-run browser on the CD linked to the FAQ home page. I am still playing around with that.

That's the most replies I've ever gotten. I haven't been on for a week or two, had a lot of stuff going on (3 midterms in 2 days, mom had surgery, etc.).
So, is there a hope this will happen?
If you'd like to Email me the PDF I would love it. I've got the adobe reader for my palm (I've been reading very boring things with it, the FAQ would rock).
Personally, I'd prefer to pay for a CD (even if it's a cheap-o cd with a sharpied label) and donate 20$ so I can justify donating to my wallet.

The pdf file is sitting here on my hard drive. 32 megs and over a 1000 pages. But it is up to the faq owner from here on.

Ijust did the same, creating an autorun CD with html files that I find easier to use than pdfs. All I need to do now is create a consistent CSS layout for them. I will then send this to Jarrod for distibution and sale.

Hi,
Once you send that file anywhere, it is out for free. Why not, before you do that, discuss it with Jarrod who maintains this board, and who has indicated that he needs some financial support to go on doing so. Wouldn´t a possibility be to have a credit card payment/donation function active on the board, thru which the PDF could be downloaded at a minor cost? Thur that function donations couyld perhaps also be done, I would myself like to donate. I don´t like sending checks thru the mail.
The idea of having the online version on the board (in addition to any PDF), divided into different sections is still that you know you get the latest most accurate info.

Great idea. Actually, Bob Isaacs of the UK Club and I have corresponded about just this idea as a fundraiser for the clubs. But I have no time to do this. If somebody could create a pdf CD of the FAQ, organized intelligently and with a linked directory, I could send it along to UK Club, US Club and Brickboard so they can duplicate and sell it to support the sites.

Actually, if you are going to dump the info to a CD, all you have to do is copy the faq files over as is. The user can view the files with a web browser just like the on-line files. Why bother to make a pdf?
But if you want a pdf, it can be done with a few mouse clicks using Adobe Acrobat or a similar tool. It will capture the active links just like the web pages. It will be one big pdf file that you can search. Nifty for off line work. I just did a '11 level' capture (which should get all pages) and got 1083 pages and a file size of 32 Mb with the following errors (in case anyone is interested):

It took a few minutes to create the file. I could send it to you, Steve, if you want. If your inbox won't take 32 Megs, I could post it on my web site for you to download.

It can include the off-site link info if you wish. One would have to get permission to distribute that though. The way that Adobe Acrobat sucks in web pages is that you give it a starting url and instructions to stay (or not) on the same server, whether to keep to files under that url (in a directory sense), and define how many layers deep you want it to go. Once that initial pass is done, you can follow specific links to grab those pages that you have missed. It usually works pretty well.
It is neat to have it all in one file because ctrl-F allows you to search on keywords. All the links are active so you can jump around much like in a browser.
There are other tools out there that will suck down a whole or partial site. Grab-a-Site is one, I think. BlueSquirrel is another that I vaguely recall. There has to be a ton more. In short, it should not be a big technical deal to make the FAQ available. I run a number of work sites from my laptop. I can make a CD available for them just by copying the directory to a CD. Drag and drop. The FAQ web master can do the same. I'd want to have someone else do the distribution though.

My inbox would choke, roll over, and expire. Far better to do this to CD and use the mail.

It is a very simple thing to make a pdf out of the FAQ if you have Adobe Acrobat or a similar tool. I made a pdf of the FAQ to use off line. It can be dumped to a pda to read underneath your car if you want. :-). To sell the CD, someone would have to take cae of the shipping and handling. Bit of a pain. Or it could be posted on this site for free. Or sold to Volvo clubs who can sell it or give it away as a member benefit.
Which got me thinking. If we collected some of the good stuff that we have found over the years and put it on a reference page all in one place, that would be neat. Might make CD sales worthwhile.
VolvoWiki anyone?
