Hello. Your best bet is to clean the switch if you can get it off without breaking it. Lots of PB Blaster and patients. The rear tranny line needs to be bent a small amount to get the switch off and it is much easier if you drop the exhaust pipes to get to the switch. Once the switch is free turn it over and remove the philips screws. Remove the plastic cover and clean all the brown grease out. There are three small fingers that have a small spring behind them. Remove the brass fingers and rub the contact face with a 600 grit sand paper to make them smooth again. Clean the spring that is at the base of arm. Those two springs are connected together, I like to pull the spring a little bit to stretch it, but be careful. Use a 3M scotch brite pad and clean the contact strips on the plastic, spray some contact cleaner and clean everything up and use a good silicone grease to lubricate everything, reassemble. Adjust the swith so that when the shift lever is in reverse the lights are on in the back. That little repair will save you about 200 bucks or more. Clear the code per FAQ and your good to go. Pauli

Your symptoms are indicating a bad PNP switch. Tranny probably not slipping it just starts up in 3rd gear when this happens. There is much info on this in the FAQ section.

Sounds like a PNP switch my car has the same problem currently. The PNP switch is a very common problem for 960s due to the fact that it is close to the exhaust the contact grease drys up.

On right side of the transmission. I have a new one waiting to go on my 960 right now. See the 700/900 FAQ section.
