Brake caliper piston seal 200 1986

While replacing my front brakes last weekend, I noticed that one of the caliper piston seals was torn. It pushed back in freely and the brakes operate well, so I do not believe that it is stuck or hanging up from dirt. I want to replace that seal without rebuilding or replacing the calipers. I have ordered a rebuilding kit with the intention of just replacing these outer rubber seals. Is this a good plan?
Thanks,
Michael

Brake caliper piston seal 200 1986

Hello:

This approach has worked for me-- I had a seal that was messed up but the caliper was still functioning well. A local rebuilder gave me the seals, which I installed after careful cleaning with brake cleaner, lubricating the seal with brake fluid. Afterwards I smeared the seal faces with Sylglide. That was about 2 years ago-- so far, so good.

The other approach is to look for a good clean caliper at your Pick-n-pull-- probably cheaper than a seal kit.

Good luck!
