Grinding/clicking noise when engaging the indicators 200 1991

When engaging the indicators in either direction I'm occassionally getting a grinding/clicking noise from what sounds like behind the dashboard center stack. I don't know the turn signal system well, but this must be a sticking relay. Where is that relay located? I also have an extra turn signal stalk that I could test.

Starting a few weeks ago the problem was intermittent, but now is happening more consistently. Vehicle temperature, headlight use and cruise control use do not seem to affect the symptom.

Other ideas? Thanks--

Grinding/clicking noise when engaging the indicators 200 1991

Remove the console side kick panel adjacent to the driver's right foot.
The turn signal relay is a black box hanging in there. Could be just below the edge of the carpet, but it lives with all the other harnesses along the center tunnel.
If you'd like to rule it out, pull the fuse for the turn signals. IF I'm not mistaken they're on the same circuit as the seat heaters- an older car used to blow the fuse for these due to the switches being adrift in a cracked center console. Turn signals went with them.

HOwever this sounds also like it may be a heater fan going bad. They definitely make awful noises and even on the lowest setting they try to run. Try pulling the heater blower fan fuse.

Good luck wi r

Don't think it's the heater fan 200 1991

Doesn't seem to be related to the heater fan. Here's a better description:

When pivoting the turn signal stalk to apply either side of indicators, there is a momentary (1-2 second) delay between when the switch is activated and the instrument panel arrow/signal bulbs illuminate. That delay is filled with a grinding/clicking/general sound of friction. The noise seems to be originating in the center stack. It happens probably 40% of the time, in either direction.

Headed to the JY on Saturday, will grab a spare relay. Thanks for the suggestions...

OK I guess I misunderstood the symptoms. Sounds like a bad turn signal relay.

They are black, and just plug right into a connector. Piece of cake. It could be partly burnt up inside, not cycling right. You're hearing a relay buzz and arc internally, it sounds like to me.

One of these I changed actually melted a hole in the side of its case....

Good luck with it!
