Timing belt woes.

Well i finally disasembled the car and have everything off the front, but I can for the life of me figure out where the timing marks should be on the block, and how they are supposed to be on the belt. And I dont see a mark on the block or on the crank sprocket, how do I line it up?

Anyone have pictures of the proper locations, and which line on the belt goes on which sprocket?

    Did you have a belt in place or had it broken? That is, is the engine in time currently, or has something moved? dpsam@sbcglobal.net

      Timing belt woes.

      The belt lost all the teeth that were incontact with the crank. So the crank, cam and 3rd sproket all turned on their own. So its not longer in line.

        Timing belt woes.

        When the teeth sheared off the T-belt, only the crank continued turning. The camshaft and intermediate shaft stopped.

        Actually is it pretty easy to re-time the engine.

        The cam drive gear has an indentation on it, like a punch mark. Line it up with the mark on the piece behind the gear. Use something like "Wite-Out" or "Liquid Paper" to mark those places.

        Similar deal on the intermediate gear. Indentation on the gear, mark on the piece behind it. That one I have practically never seen. So I remove the distributor cap (it's a 240) and see that the rotor points to a mark on the upper edge of the housing. If the rear of the car is 12 0'clock, the mark is about at 7 0'clock. With that in place yo will be looking the right place opn the inter. drive and mark. Use wite out here, too.

        The mark on for the crank is a little trickier. I have worked on B23 and B230 engines, and my recollection is mixed between them. Amother brickster will answer better than can I.

        If the timing is not right when you try the engine, you have added labor to the job but have done no damage.

        hi there.
        if you remove the crank pulley it will be easier to see.
        once found mark with white out.
        can be seen with flashlight with crank pulley installed.

          I have the pulley off. you have to take it off to get to the sprocket.

          I know where to set the cam and the auxiliary shaft sprocket to I can see the marks.

          I cannot see any marks on the crank sprocket or the block near the crank sprocket. What part of the crank sprocket needs to be used for lining it up? anyone have a picture of one lined up that I could use for refference?

            Timing belt woes.

            Use the pulley and the lower cover. The pulley has a line between the two outermost belt grooves. The lower timing cover has a big "O" line molded into it. You don't need to have the bolt tight or anything, just set everything in place, zero it, and work on getting the belt in place.

            As long as the crank isn't turned while you line up the belt and the other two sprockets, you're all set.

              I did exactly what you said to do and the car fired right up! Now that its running I noticed a few things. The a/c does indeed work. The car needs the brakes bled. The current water pump is leaking a tiny bit. The exhaust bumps against the body during start up and just off idle.

              The engine is strong and the car drives well, trans shifts fine. There is a clunk in the steering, I noticed the passangers side front wheel has a tiny bit of side to side play, so the front end will need work soon. The Odometer doesnt work, but the speedo does. Passangers side rear window motor does not work. Drivers seat is broken as in the back isnt straight, it leans to the right. The interior is filty.

              I still havent taken it out on the highway, as it does not have a tag yet. Ill post some pics of it tomorrow. But a good running 89 240dl with ac for $500. Not bad.
