Oil filters 120-130

I'm sure this has been done to death before but I can't find anything definitive in a search.

What sort of Oil filter should I use. I have read that the genuine Volvo oil filter has a pressure relief valve in it that does something useful. Others have described it as a bypass valve.

My local parts store looked up their book and sold me a filter that was listed as suitable for my 63 221. What can go wrong using that?

Anyone know for sure?

My understanding (limited) is that all reputable filters have some sort of by-pass design to prevent engine damage from clogging. Original Volvo and Mann filters have a no-return valve that, supposedly, keeps the oil from draining from the head and upper block back into the crankcase when the engine is not running, thus mitigating lube starvation at start up. There may be other brands that offer this feature. I'd go to the sites of the brands available to you for info and, if you get no joy there, send them an e-mail. That said, the oil pump also has a valve in it that, I believe, performs the same function as the no-return in Volvo and Mann filters, so I wonder how necessary that valve in the filter really is. I could be wrong about this, and would like to hear from the more knowledgeable on this subject.

I know for sure that your question is exceptionally vague.
What did they sell you??? For sure???
Mann and Wix are known to be good; Wix short(late) or long (early) both fit, and they're good.

What's vague about asking if it's true that I really should use only genuine Volvo? I've read it in several sources but nobody seems to give a good reason why it must be Volvo. One article suggested it was a bypass valve that allowed a good flow of oil past the filter if the filter became too blocked - dirty oil is better than too little oil. Another article hinted that it was a non-return valve that retained the oil in the right places to reduce startup wear.

The reason I didn't say what brand it was is because those outside Australia and New Zealand probably don't know what a Repco RZ10 filter is. I haven't come across Mann or Wix in New Zealand - but then I haven't really been searching.

Does anyone know for sure what is special about the genuine Volvo filter that should make me want to buy one?

There is interesting info here on testing oil filters:

        oil filter flow test

The original post asked for a difinitive comparison of one particular filter to an unknown group of filters. Although I must admit not being familiar with the Repco brand, it doesn't seem possible to easily provide a good answer to the original question.

Hope the link provides your answer. The variation found in oil filter performance certainly suprised me.

        Best regards,
