Spark plug heat range...question 700 1988

....which plug would you recommend for a 230ft that's typically running at 10 psi (overboosted) with 92 -93 octane and mobil 1 10-30..

I've lost all my info on heat ranges of plugs. I'll be pulling them out today, pretty sure they're Bosch in the "6"range.

Would you run hotter or colder plugs? Any theory behind it?

Thanks!!

Josh

Every engine is different. Boost, octane and what oil you're using tells nothing. You'll have to "read" the plugs from your engine after a highway run to know whether you're already at the optimum range, or have to bump up or down a range. Changing brands to an "equivalent" usually means redoing the process for that brand.

      Spark plug heat range...question 700 1988

Thanks..that's not an answer I was expecting. I just swapped in some NGK v-Groove rated at a "5", down from a regular NGK plug rated at "6".

The "6"plugs looked fine, the coloring was more brown/tan than gray/white, but otherwise they had nothing else wrong with them. So I might have made a mistake going to a 5, but I was going to turn up the boost to 12 psi anyways..so that is another factor that changes.

      Man this is fun!!!!

Regular copper plug in different heat ranges are getting harder and harder to find nowadays in the aisle...

      Appreciate the advice, mapleleafer.

Japanese and European numbering is reversed from US - lower number is hotter, so you technically went up a range. A tan ring on the centre insulator, just down from the electrode is perfect. It sounds like you started at the right place and then left it. Cooler is better for reduced wear and chance of detonation, you want to stay just hot enough to remain clean.

You can find a good selection of copper plugs in Autolite brand. I run #63 in mine with 14 lb boost. Wife's car gets 64s with stock .5 bar settings. Can Tire doesn't carry them though.

          Darn.

Something told me in the back of my mind that they were reversed.

Thanks for confirming it. I believe I saw a good selection of Autolites at Can tire here in Regina. Tommorow is Diffy / driveshaft /rear wheels and brake day, now I'll add cooler plugs to the list too. Thanks for the heads up! I'm going to try 12 psi on Thursday, so that advice was very well timed.

Are Autolites reversed in the coding as well or are they North American?

By the way, does N.Y. have Canuck Tire franchises there or are you border-hopping, just to get the shopping experience?

          Cheers, Josh
