A/C Compressor S90-V90 1998

HI, I have a balky A/C compressor. It keeps switching on and off. When it's off, if I tap the front of the compressor it kicks in but will not stay engaged for long. Air is very cold when it's on. Do I need a new one or any other ideas. If I have to get another is there any other place outside of the dealer or could I get have it rebuilt. They are really expensive. Thanks. 190K

I had a similar problem with mine. The clutch can be replaced @ about $165 for parts from Volvo. However I ended up buying a new compressor on ebay for about $200 + shipping. It was a pain to get it recharged again though and it required replacement of the reciever drier when the compressor was changed another $35. I think I'd try the new clutch route next time.

Hello, I have run into this problem before. The wire that engages the clutch is broken at the entrance to the a/c cluth. If you have some patients and time you can solder the wire back together for a long lasting repair. remove about a half inch of insulation and then heat with a soldering iorn with the solder running down into the clutch. This will fix the problem about 20% of the time. The rest of the time get a repacement compressor. Cheaper than a clutch. Just a pain in the A to do and recharge the system. Pauli
