Outrageous Ebay Item. PLease help me!!!!!!

These pop up every month, check it out:http://cgi.ebay.ca/Volvo-High-Mileage-Club-Badge-200-000-1800-122-240-740_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33643QQitemZ8054622737QQrdZ1. It's a mileage badge that's available free from Volvo N.A. This is a scam that I've been try ing to fight by send messages to the bidders. I see this as highly unethical and down right shameless. I know a bunch of you will say that the bid price reflects the Value of the item. But I must posit that the bid price of such an item, regardless of its value, depends upon the bidder's ignorance as well as the seller's non-disclosure of provenance. I email these bidder's with the web address for Volvo N.A., if you get totally bored some time and really want to help someone (yes a stanger) who is a fellow brickster, graciously do the same!

The website is http://www.volvocars.us/_Tier2/Owners/HighMileageClub.htm

Thank you

Not so outrageous Ebay Item. PLease help me!!!!!! 140-160 1969

Well, as one who has bought one, I can say that your analysis is not always
correct. I contacted Volvo from Panama a number of years ago and told them
about my cars, one of which had just passed 100K, one of which had 198K and
one had 260K. They kindly sent me badges for 100K, 200K and 300K. I put two
of them in what I considered to be a "safe place". In 1998 I came back home
to Oklahoma, and as the 164 approached 300K I began looking among my rodentine
assortment of certificates, papers and other stuff, to no avail. After a month
of searching I began to watch ebay and when a 300K badge came up, I bought it,
figuring that I had lost one fair and square so the best I could do was to
replace it. Now I have one and will install it at the appropriate time,
perhaps following a paint and interior job (including heater fan).

But George, cmon, as of this post the badge was at almost $80 dollars Canadian! I'm not calling these people "dummies" but I am positive they don't know that they are Free. What gets me is that they are being sold in plain plastic wrappers without the gorgeous presentation wallet with the nice period picture ad of the black 164(?) that we are so familiar with.

To wit, I have gotten only positive responses from the numerous ebay bidders who I have contacted thanking me for showing them where these badges come from in much the same way one might thoughtfully correct a seller advertising Virgos that claim to fit on the newer V-90. I word my messages to both the bidders and sellers in language that doesn't detract from the sprit of the auction. I'll ask the bidder: "are these the same badges available free from Volvo N.A. at thier website?" This way the prospective buyer can scroll down the listing and and make their own judgements. Meanwhile I'll contact the bidder through their e-mail to share the same information, again, carefully worded so as not to detract from the auction.

In your case you went into the deal educated and ahead of the game whereas these folks are not. One of the other badges from the same seller was being bid on from someone in Asia - which mirrors your situation. Maybe I am being too altruistic or idealistic (or I have to much spare time); I've noticed nobody is really responding to this post, but I feel these little scams denegrate the marque, the hobby, and take advatage of well meaning enthusiatic brick owners. Enough said.

Actually, as far as I know they are only available in the US, so if someone elsewhere wants one of these Volvo marketing trinkets they have to pay. Besides we're supposed to be living in a free market economy.
