Carbon Fiber Hoods 900

Hello everyone. For some time I've been patiently waiting for carbon fiber hoods from SOMEONE. IPD introduced them for the 200's about 2 years ago, and I've been waiting since then for them to keep going and make some for the '90/'91 to '95 700's and 900's. Back over a year ago I had emailed Eric at IPD about them and he told me they were either being developed, or being considered for development (I don't remember which one), but reguardless that they would most likely be for sale within one year. Since I have not seen them, or heard anything of them, I just got done emailing them again about it. My obsession with carbon fiber is not only that it is a real nice material in that it is very strong, light weight, and visually pleasing all at the same time, but also because my current factory hood is all dented and chipped (and rust is starting to grow just this year now) and the junk yards do not have a hood in anywhere near good shape (trust me, I go at least once every two weeks). Now I would like some opinions on this. Would anyone else out there like to see some carbon fiber hoods for, what I think, are the last of the best and true Volvo's ever built, or should I just give up my hopes and dreams? I am also well aware that they will be expensive (for a hood) because I know that carbon fiber is fairly new and expensive to make. Aside from price, does anyone else think it would be nice if they were at least available for you to begin with? Thank you for your time everyone! -Steve O.

    Try car-part.com
I punched in 89 740 hood and got 9 pages of steel hoods and 3 pages of aluminum hoods. BTW that was for the whole U.S.

    Steve,
Where do you live? Around here (the NW) the boneyards are full of 740's and 940's, many with good hoods. Finding any body parts for a 700/900 is never a problem.

I doubt there will be a market for carbon fiber body panels in the 700/900 series because they aren't nearly as popular as the 200 series. A mid 80's 240 in good condition will sell for $3-4k and a similar 740 or 760 turbo in mint condition goes for $1000 at best. I've never paid over $500 for one myself (except the 780, of course)

Some of the V6 and diesel 700's had aluminum hoods, perhaps you should look for one.

LEE, your post just goes to show that 240 owners are much better mechanics and just plain smarter in general. People treat the 700/900 as disposable cars like the Honda or Hyandai. Why? because those 700/900 boxes just don't have any character like the venerable 240. Besides, 240 owners have more class and sophistication.

BUT REALLY FOLKS: The carbon fiber hood from IPD sells for what? like $800? I don't see any point to it unless you have a totally stripped out, light weight SCCA'ish car with a turbo putting out real numbers. Otherwise what you have is some pretentious Ricey fashion accesory that'll eventually get chewed up by the sun in the same manner as our dash boards. Face it, these aren't race cars. My advice is to go with the aluminum and delete some of the cross bracing or underpinnings of the hood. Have you considered fiberglass? Maybe kepler niko will chime in with his fiberglassing expertise.
