Clean 1973 145 - All the way from London, England - have a look! 140-160

Here is my pride and joy which I am forced to sell because of our family ( read my wife's ) need for a Camper Van.

Oh well *sigh* I'm sure you can sympathise. She is on Ebay in the UK at the mement and though nobody in the US of A would be interested ( shipping costs alone would be $3000 and what would you do with right hand drive???) I thought you might want to have a look before she goes...

Yours Sadly

I would find it a very hard decision to lose a car that nice. With caravans as light as they are in the UK and towing limits higher than what is acceptable in the States, it's too bad you couldn't just add a tow hitch and find a nice caravan for your RV'ing, like the one below. I guess you'd still have to find a place to store the caravan though. Hope you find a good new owner.

Hi Clive - thanks for that . Yes the old bus would make a magnificent tow car but staorage is a problem as you say. Living in ( fairly central ) London parking is at a premium and I'm lucky to have two off site places ( wifes car and mine ) but the caravan would have nowhere to go,

Beautiful car.

By the way, what's up with the side-view mirrors next to the engine hood (bonnet?)? Were those added on by someone or was that an option for the 145 in Europe? I thought the last model with mirrors there was the Amazon.

Hi Mike - no the mirrors were added as the original owner towed a caravan. The mirrors he put on had huge 1ft stalks and looked like mishapen rabbit ears - these were replaced with smaller items but I would have been happier without them but was stuck with two holes on the wing. Eventually I would have liked to fill them but never got round to it.

Those were a dealer option in the Euro models up to 1973. The 74 ones came without the vent windows and side view mirror on the window frame sail, like the 244s.

Must be an EXCEPTIONAL wife, to my way of thinking!!

"and what would you do with right hand drive???"

Scare the bejesus out of everyone else on the road by pretending I am driving in merry old England!!! A fella's got to have some fun sometime!

Condolences on your sad choice. A lovely car!!

Mike

or maybe work with the postal service. the 144 would do a great job hauling all that mail, especially come Chrismas time!

Thanks Mike

You could always drive around the US highways with a German Shepard dog in the LHD seat ( bound to get some looks!) and think of the fun when the cops stop you and go to the wrong side!

Take care

Ross

I wish you luck with your new camper van. It will never replace the estate, but it is not intended to do so. I appreciate how well you and the other two owners have preserved the automobile. Here, in the northern parts of the USA, we have much to much salt on our roads in the winter and all of our treasures are rusting away. In the South and West, it is the sun and heat which does the destruction.
I had thought of bidding on it just to help the price along, but I guess that is cheating. I hope you get at least 2,000 pounds, I expect it is worth in the neighborhood of 3,000.

Wow! Glacier white! that's the original color my dad's car came with in 74. I inherited it and would not let it go for a million bucks! It still sits in our driveway after 32 years, and its still our official family hauler.

Good luck on the sale. Hopefully your car will go to a good home. Is it carburetted or FI?

Carburetted B20 - thanks for that ! I shall miss the old girl but space is tight in London and it's difficult to keep more than two cars parked safely without incuring parking tickets every few days - $100 a piece! Ouch!

Beautiful car: it must be tough to part with it. I am amazed it has lasted all these years in London traffic and winter conditions. You must have garaged it most of the time.

Steve I wonder how it survived too - howver for the first 26 years she was carefully nurtured and garaged by an elderly couple in the London suburbs so that may account for it,

Once the kids have got too old to sleep in the campervans bunks I'm going back to a nice Brick again! Thats for sure!
