Trying to fix odometer on my 89 240 auto, When I took out the instrument cluster, I noticed a little white lever/stick, stick out from side of speedo, Anybody tell me what the purpose of it is? Also is it common for odometer to fail, while the speedomter still works? Thanks.

Just did this today. Very simple repair. For shadtree mech . Follow these INSTRUCTIONS FOR simple repair. Buy a new gear from Fcp groton. They are RARELY AVAILABLE at the Junk yard. Common failure. Total repair took me less than an 1 hour including clean up..

First - I don't know about the little white lever.

Second - failure of the odo while the speedo works is VERY common. Takes a new plastic gear and the time a smarts to replace the broken one. Low cost DIY job.

OR you might find a used speedo in which the gear is not broken. Note the "K" number on your speedo, another unit with the same number will work without error.
