Fuel Pump Whine? 700

I got to work this morning and when i parked i heard this high pitch noise from under the car, upon investigation it is the main fuel pump. Now i have never heard this before but it came and went, i drove home and the noise is gone. Now here are a couple of things, I heard it when i got to work off the highway, i drove back roads home and noise went away but there is a 50 mph zone on the way home and after that speed zone i heard the noise again, but when i made it home it was gone. So it seems to me like high speed driving is making this noise and at low speed it goes away, is the fuel pump heating up at high speeds and cooling down at low speeds or am i just crazy? My other question is, is it going to poop out on me any day or what? thanks

Don't know if your year has a pre pump in the tank but if it does and it's bad it would cause an extra load on the main pump.

Mine's been like that for years, even after replacing that in-tank pump, which probably had nothing wrong with it in the first place. I simply quit listening to damn pump.

I also had a 740 with a noisy fuel pump. And it whined for years! Replacing the intank pump didn't fix it, and the pump worked just fine. In fact, it wound up being placed in my next Volvo after that one died on me. It worked fine for another few years, until I threw a rod in that one. I think there's just something about those pumps, where after a while they get loud. My advice? Get a louder stereo.
