940T positive battery cable corrosion 900 1992

Hello All:

The positive battery cable on my '92 945T is corroded-- particularly bad on the outermost (toward the radiator) wire-- the insulation is split and the wire filaments are separated for an inch or so, and probably considerably further underneath the insulation.

My first thought was to replace the positive cable, but tracing it backward suggests that this is a little more complicated than most, given the number of wires and the routing of all these wires in their sheaths...

Can anybody tell me offhand what that outermost 1/4" thick red cable feeds? My first instinct is to open the cable sheathing a bit, cut the wire back until I get past the corrosion and then put a new end on it-- it looks like if I cut open the sheathing, I may be able to gain the additional length I need.

Has anyone replaced the positive cable? I can't find it online anywhere, suggesting an expensive, dealer-only part.

Any advice would be appreciated!

It feeds the starter. yes cut off the end and put on a new connector.

      Hello David:

Thanks for the reply-- that fits with the symptoms-- I had been having slow starts in spite of good alternator output and seemingly reasonable battery measurements.

I was apprehensive about diving in and cutting back the wire once I had a look at the complex nature of the positive cable(s).

Last night I cut it back about 2" and put on a new connector-- so far, so good! Careful cleaning of the other 3 connections seems to have resulted in a more stable idle as well.

      Thanks!

I had a similar thing on my 240, and simple brushed the buildup out between the threads, used vinegar to rinse out the rest, then taped it all back up. It may not have been corroded as bad as yours, however.
