idle speed 140-160 1972

On my 1972 164 with fuel injection, I am having two idle related problems which I think are unrelated.

1. I cant get the idle below about 1100-1200 RPM although the idle screw is turned all the way in. I have checked and cleaned the air slide. Then I replaced the mechanical air slide with an electrical one from an early 240. No change. All hoses are in very good condition. Maybe a very small vacuum leak which I have not yet located is the culprit.

2. If the engine is shut off when warm and restarted when still warm, the idle is about 500 RPM for a minute and then returns to the 1100-1200 range. Injectors were just serviced by Rich Jensen-Cruzin Performance. They leaked and had poor spray pattern before servicing so I concluded unburned gas leaking into the cylinder was the culprit.

All suggestions cheerfully accepted. Thanks

Thanks for all the suggestions. Problem resolved. A little more advance for the distributor and a little adjustment to the throttle cable to leave a bit of slack. Also reset the position of the throttle plate stop screw although I dont think I actually changed it.

First make sure there's no crud in the throttle plate area, and that the throttle plate is firmly attached to its shaft and can't go cockeyed. Everything else must be done with the motor fully warm.

Turn the throttle stop screw out so the throttle is completely closed. Make sure the cable linkage has a bit of slack in it and isn't holding the throttle open. Turn the stop screw to the point where it just barely starts opening the throttle, and then 1/4 turn further.

Start the motor and adjust the throttle bypass screw for the desired idle speed. if it still wanders, adjust the throttle position switch (which I'll describe separately upon request).

Is the throttle plate going all the way shut? Maybe it needs cleaning in there.
