erratic startup 93 940 900 1993

1993 940 SE auto. Help! got a recurring problem which only happens in UK summer. Now the weather's got a little warmer when I startup the engine seems to hunt up and down for 15-20 seconds@ between 200-800 rpm before suddenly finding its feet and coming up to a steady tickover @ about 900 rpm. Any attempt to move straight off while its doing this and the engine will cut for sure the first time you back the throttle off. I hardly have this problem at all in winter but when the air temp outside is @ 15 deg C or over it seems to happen often.
Any suggestions? I've some mechanical experience but i'm no expert.

Aye Roll is right, I think you may have misunderstood the reference to using carburetor cleaner. It is the throttle body which gets dirty and he was recommending cleaning it with the carb cleaner. I can testify that it help the idle greatly. Don't get the cleaner in the throttle position switch, however. There is a spray cleaner called throttle body cleaner which is supposed to be better than carb cleaner.

I can also suggest that you clean the Idle Air Valve. The IAV gets dirty and sticky. While you have the throttle body off for cleaning, you will have a clear view of the IAV to remove and clean it. Use carb cleaner.

Look for the car to have a dirty throttle body.
Very often poor idle is a result of a filthy throttle.

A can of carburetor cleaner spray and some hand work should get it clean and restore a good strong idle.

It's not hard to remove the throttle- three 13mm nuts, one plug to the TPS, 2 vacuum hoses, and the linkage to the pulley.

Thanks rob, this ones the turbo injection, not carb. I'll have a go at cleaning up the linkage though, I've never done it and its filthy which might well make a difference. What gets me is that it did the same thing last summer and i suspected it was something to do with the ambient air temperature
