Manual transmission oil '82 245...what type/weight? 200 1982

I've got an '82 245 and am wondering what sort of transmission oil it takes. It's a 4-speed with overdrive. I'm wanting to replace the oil in the transmission and need to know what type to use.

How about the differential lube?

Gosh, I bet no one has ever, ever asked this question before. Can't you look in your owner's manual or similar document online, maybe a google search? Damn, I guess we will just all have to chime in on this one, can't wait to see how many posts this question generates....

ATF Fluid Type F Will Work Fine. However I Instead Use Redline MTL. It is more expensive and kind of hard to find. I find that shifting & overdrive is smoooother with the Redline MTL. Hope this helps.

I changed out the fluids in my 1980 245 DL last fall - same manual transmission w/overdrive as yours (I believe it is an M47). I used Valvoline ATF type F in the tranny and synthetic 75w90 (Redline) in the differential. No problems so far; I intend to change out the transmission fluid again to a synthetic sometime this summer. This will be more for informational purposes; the ATF in there now is working just fine.

You should find that info in your Owner's Manual.

If that's not available, you can call 1-800-25-VOLVO and order one.

But - takes time.

The tranny fluid is ATF. Good to lube and to be the hydraulic fluid needed to operate the o/d. Whether to use the Dexron of Type F, I don't know. If what is in there is original, it is probably Type F. I would use whatever type I have for the power steering system.

Good Luck,

Bob

Owner's Manual says ATF Type F... 200 1982

...or G(FLM), which I think is no longer available.

As for using Dexron, I wouldn't. Because I believe that Duane (OD Guru) has said that it's detrimental to the Manual OD in some way.

According to Volvo, I don't believe the oil ever needs to be changed, but I was actually wondering about that.

I've heard good things about some synthetic lubes--might make it find gears a lot smoother. I've just been putting this off because it's never required.

I've used Redline MTL synthetic lube and it works exceptionally well. The synchros work better and the o/d shifts more firmly. I'd use it again in a second. In fact I've got some bottles sitting on the shelf waiting to go in the M41 on the 122...

Is there any concerns about mixing the remnants of the oil stock oil with a synthetic when it is changed?
