B230F w/130K Miles, Valve Guide Wear Judgement? 200 1991

Hello:
I have my B230F engine out and in pieces.
This is because of massive ongoing oil leaking caused by excessive blowby.
The rings were carboned in there basically solid, no movement possible.
There was so much carbon on tops of pistons and in the head dishes that
before taking the head off, I had turned engine down on its side, and carbon
junk piled up piston edge and interfered with TDC, could not hand-crank it over!
Anyway.... cleaned up now, new rings, honed, etc etc.. even had new rod bushings pressed and honed... but the valve guides worry me. How much clearance is enough??? for example, valve stems measure 0.3125 and corresponding guide is 0.3150.. That is, a pilot drops in to that taper point, measuring the pilot at that neck point=0.3150 .. so, with that I'd say I have 0.0025 clearance. There has to be SOME clearance and I think 0.002 is right.... so these guides would be perfectly fine for another few years???? The valve heads wiggle about that 0.002 just lifted off the seat. A guide job is not something I can do alone, and a machine shop bill is not in my budget right now... but if I HAVE TO I will, so please advise? Yes, carbon on top of valves too, but I think it's the seals that were hard as rocks...definitely shot...

The guide clearance you have measured seems just fine. Also mike the valve stems to ensure no taper, which is rare. Exhausts tend to wear more, and mostly on the turbo engines.
My biggest concern is the re-ring. The B230 uses pistons that must maintain a very tight piston to cylinder wall clearance. More than about .003 inch and they will slap on a cold start. This is due to the very short skirt used on those engines. Earlier engines like the B21 and B23 could tolerate far more taper without problems. If the bores had no taper when first examined, and the piston skirts are not scuffed, you will probably be OK, as long as the machine shop did not hog out too much material doing the hone.

Thank you for the reply and boy are you ever right about the piston slap! When I took these out, one or two had a definite scuff on side of skirt, not deep but very obvious. It worried me from the start. Also, with the way the rings were "glued" in tight I figured there's no way to hold the geometry to keep pistons where they belong, so I'm hoping it will be ok, especially with also having new rod bushings to take up their old slack. No problem on over doing the honing because I did it myself with bottle brush hone, very light just enough to scratch up the walls... a lot of factory 45 degree hatch was in there anyway. I suppose you could say NOT HONED, rather just DE-GLAZED.. that was my mistake on original write up here...sorry about that... One cyl wall had brighter polish to one side from that slap/scuffing but temporarily slipping the new rings down in there seems to end-gap ok, can't say there was cylinder hard ware, just mostly loss of some crosshatching.. THANKS FOR YOUR HELP, VERY APPRECIATED.

It sounds like there was no taper at all in the bores, which is good. Most of the B230 pistons will show some scuffing. The area between the ring grooves will also show a lack of carbon and/or polishing where the crown hits the bore when cold.
The new rings will increase the drag of the piston in the bore, and the slap may be more pronounced. If the skirts are not too bad, then whatever noise you get will probably be benign, and get quieter as the ring friction drops off after a good break-in.
I hope it goes well for you - sounds like you did everything right.
        Rhys

I think you need to consult a Bentley manual for wear limits on the guides and valve stems. Two thou seems OK by the seat of my pants, but better to be sure.

My 2 cents worth says that if you put new valve seals on and new "absorbers" and lightly grind in the valves (since there was so much carbon elsewhere)you'd have a very high probability of being OK.
