Need flywheel lock for B280

Does anyone have a source for the flywheel locking tool for the B280? Or maybe know a good work around?

Thanks again,
Jesse

I don't know if you want to remove the flywheel or the crank pulley, but for a "universal" crankshaft lock, the "rope trick" works on any piston engine. It's been posted here many times, but to save you the search, here is my "canned" version:

NOTE: This is written for the B21/23/230. You'll have to adapt it to your B280 where necessary**

1 - Pull plugs and rotate crank to #1 0° TDC Compression
2** - Verify #1 and #2 valves closed - look thru oil fill hole, cams pointed upward.
3 - Rotate crank about 90° past TDC
4 - Stuff about 3 feet of clothesline into # 1 plug hole, leaving 6" outside
5 - Use socket, breaker bar, and pipe extension to loosen pulley bolt
6 - Tighten bolt the same way, but start with crank about 90° before #1 TDC Comp.

To my knowledge, this is the only "trick" holding tool alternative that allows tightening the bolt to book spec of **[I don't have B280 spec]

Here's what some 1st time users had to say:
"The "rope trick" for holding the engine still while removing the harmonic balancer bolt worked like a charm. Honestly, I doubted that it would, but WOW!"

"I finally had an opportunity today to use one of the "rope" tricks to help take off the crank bolt. All I can say is - it worked like a charm! Two seconds and I had the crank bolt off..." (6/7/01)

"I did this a few weeks ago exactly as Bruce described and it couldn't have been easier." (5/29/05)

"....the rope trick worked like a charm to loosen and tighten the crank pulley bolt!!," (12/28/05)

"tryed the . . . method without any luck but the rope trick worked fine to remove the pully bolt" (1-10-06)

Wow! this woked, though i had better luck with a large diameter cord, the smaller clothesline would take far more than 3 feet because it compresses like the dickens.

Thanks!
Jesse

Glad to hear this old trick worked for you.

I suppose the size and amount of cord depends on the combustion chamber volume and how far down the piston is when you stuff the cord in.

About 3 1/2' works for me on the B230, starting with the piston 1/4 down in the bore (more space seems to make it easier to feed the cord in). But when I start turning back CCW to loosen the bolt, the resistance doesn't start until the piston is getting close to the top.

Most times that I've needed to lock a flywheel for bolt tightening - I use a large screwdriver held firmly into a ring gear tooth through the starter opening. Hold the screwdriver against the engine block as a fulcrum.
