check engine light on at start up: what's wrong? 200

The last few times I've started my brick the "check engine" light is illuminated, then goes off within a minute. Probably out of 7 starts, 2 of them the light was on. Any advice would be appreciated! FYI, my car has 61K on it.

CD, does your Classic have the wood trim? If so, could you post pictures of it? It is so rare to see a 240 with wood trim.

Would an alternator on the verge of failing cause this light to come on?
That's a speculation on my part.

Check the onboard diagnostics (ODB) for problem codes, see the 700 FAQ Dan

Service light, perhaps?
See the FAQ.

Well, with 61K on a Classic, the intermittent check engine light just means you have to sell the car to me for $50 bucks! (JUST KIDDING)! Hang on to it, its a great car! Do a search of the 740 FAQs on reading the error codes which will point you in the right direction. First thought would be a bad heater in the O2 sensor but that one is just from the hip.

Does the car idle and run fine while the light is on?
