M46 Gear shifter removal help needed - in the home stretch. 700 1991

The silver snap ring at the base of the shifter lever holds the ball of the shifter to the transmission linkage rod below.

I can't get this snap ring off to release the shifter lever, and believe it or not, this little bugger is the only thing keeping the transmission in the car. I have separated the trans from the bell housing but can't move it any farther back with this shifter lever attached.

Anyone??
