Who among us names their cars? What are they named? How'd you pick the name?
My Burgandy '82 GL is named Rusty, for so many reasons.
Dad calls his '91 245 'Puff'...the Magic Wagon.
My black '93 244 is nameless. I don't know why, but he seems to have very little personality. No names present themselves. I've tried for about 10 months, since I got him, to figure out his personality and give him a name, but no go. I even did my best to track down the previous owner and wrote him a letter asking what the car was named - I got no responce. :(
I hate having a nameless car with no personality. Maybe after a few more scratches and dents and mechanical quirks I'll be able to pick a name.
OK, your turn.

My current daily driver has no name... *sigh*... I should do something about that.
Those taht do though...
'65 1800S "Mae". Named by a girl I worked with when I first got the car. This started a trend...
'71 145s (sold) was "June" (June manufacture date)
'70 145s "Jan" (January mfg date)
'53 Jaguar XK120 coupe "April" (Yup.. guess the manufacture date), and it's purple.
Others that ain't with the theme that sorta named themselves...
'80 244dl "Mr Brown" Very fitting name assigned by my then 5yr old niece when it was my brother's car.
'66 122s wagon "Lvo" (Pronounced elvo) The First 'V' and 'O' are missing from teh hood letters.
'50 Dodge Power Wagon "Dode".. for the same reason as the 122.. teh middle 'D' in dodge is missing.
'55 VW Bug with period homemade baja conversion.. "The Green Grunt". Trust me... it fits perfectly. That name came with the car...]
The rest of my vehicles just don't have names... usually just 'the maroon car' or 'the 164' or 'the green wagon'... as others mentioned, I just havn't put enough miles on yet... that, or they are destined to be parts cars, and naming a parts car is probably like naming cattle that are destined for slaughter..
again... *sigh*

Wow... we never called my father's 1953 XK120 FHC March, though I guess we could have. s680784 - what the S/N on yours?
As far as my vehicles go, nothing special for names, just 'the volvo' for my '90 245 and 'spitty' for my '70 Triumph Spitfire.

When I had my first Volvo - a maroon 1971 142 S - a metal-head buddy of mine who drove a souped-up Chevelle named it Dutchess. I wasn't too fond of that name.
My current beige 240 doesn't have a name; I've never been moved to name my cars even though I am very attached to them. I once named it Bob the Butterscotch Beast, but that didn't last long. Maybe I should name it Obi-Wan.
I do have a name picked for my dream car - Taxi. It is a 164. I would paint it bright yellow, put checkered lines on the sides and an OUT OF SERVICE sign on the roof. They sell that stuff on eBay.

1971 144 - Big Black...the black ones have very little personality for some reason. They scare me. This one sucked up all my money, the more I fixed the worse it ran. 8-year love-hate relationship.

My first Brick was an '88 245; got it new for the wife-mobile. By the time I took it over, it had every buzz, squeak and rattle imaginable, so I named it "Rumblegutz"... and the name stuck, in spite of major suspension overhaul. Sadly retired at 250K after it was rear-ended. His replacement is a '92 245 that I got with 115K on it and which has become my hobby toy as well as the daily driver. Named him "Son O' Gutz" or SOG for short. One lady friend preferred "ABBA" since she determined the car was female (especially since I spent so much time working on it!).
The ex-wife's 850 remains nameless, since neither has a soul.

funny, i've never named any of my cars. i've always shyed away from it; even though they all have very distinct personalities. sometimes i'll call a car "baby" to coax it for various reasons..."c'mon baby" the one vehicle i came close to sticking a name on is my 75' econoline 250 van. i started to call her "maybeline"...it never really stuck. i've driven it around the country (literally) once and across and back once (in the dead of winter) with no problems. it's a white panel van with a black hood and cab clearance lights. it has lichen and sometimes a bit o' moss growing on the sides. if any vehicle is going to have a name...

I have named a few, and here they are from oldest to most recent ownership
72 142S "The Yellow Peril" which the previous owner had called "The Banana", not knowing that cars shouldn't be named after fruit....
73 164E 5 speed "Smokey Joe" needed new rings, and got them, but the name stuck.
88 740 Turbo "The Volvo From Hell" and it was.....I should have pounded a maple stake through its heart and spared anyone else the ownership....
94 Z28 Camaro "Black Stealth" well, it wasn't too stealthy after I modded it.
Presently I drive:
80 242 DL flathood, chocolate brown, "The Brown Bomber", which has the World's Most Powerful Single Carburetor Volvo Engine in it, which is a B23E with the B21A single SU carb - K cam, 10.2:1 compression, ported head, manifold and carb, lightened flywheel, and balanced internals. It pulls quite hard....
|
|
-
|
Wait a minute!
The 73 145E is the Yellow Peril!
Then there was Rapid Red, '60 544 that got totaled on an icy night in
north Tulsa on the way home,
Old Blue, the 59 544 that replaced Rapid Red, blue the Rambler pistons
I put in it after 40,000 miles of hard driving in San Antonio
Whitey, the 58 444 that replaced Old Blue,
Then there was Li'l Red, the 67 122 that I shipped to Panama in 1980
(still there, AFAIK, but probably not in operation)
The Celery Wagon that I bought from Harold Munns in Ware Shoals SC
when grandson Ben was born in 1984 (still got it)
the Gray Wagon which I bought from Mr. Wycoff in Tulsa on ebay
(neither of the two above is currently functional)
The 164 that I have had since 1971 and the S60 T5 that I bought on
ebay last January don't have names other than their model designations,
which in my family is probably sufficient.
Then there was the cream colored '63 122 that I got in San Antonio and
shipped to Panama in 1971 - no name, and the green '69 144 that I bought
in Weleetka, OK and shipped to Panama in 1990 that didn't get a name either.
But most of 'em had names.

Black Beauty was a male, and by the end of his days he was not so "pretty". He had good owners, and he had bad owners. The story is about developing trust, loosing trust, and finding it again.
I am having trouble naming my red '92 wagon. I have not been able to drive it enough to give it a name. I was calling it Red, but now that I know someone else has that name for their car, I will just have to name mine something else.
My first car was Gertrude. Named after an old character I played in a play. My second car was the Red Raider. It had the same colors as my high school, and that was our mascot. My third car was Baby Blue. 'Bought it new. My project Mustang is called Bonerack until it is reborn....But nothing comes to me for my first Volvo.

How did you do the skull and crossbones emblem? I bet that looks great on the black car.
|
|
-
|
Actually the Jolly Roger emblem is on "Rusty" AKA Krusty Rusty the Pirate Volvo.
When I got Rusty his grill was busted all to pieces - but all the pieces were there. This being a super-budget car, (originally a parts car, but too damn good for that fate) I glued as much as possible back together and was left only without a slash or emblem. Got a piece of aluminum from the hardware store for the slash, and I COULD have glued the original emblem back on but instead I decided to tinker. I found an old piece of clear plastic behind the shop - I know not what kind - and cut a square out. Then stenciled a white skull onto the back and painted the rest black. So the skull actually is under a layer of clear plastic, like the original.
I even got so fancy as to sand/buff the plastic but as you can see in this larger image, for some annoying reason it developed hairline fractures on the sides after buffing. Not sure why. Heat maybe.
I tinkered for weeks trying to make it just like the Volvo emblem - that is, chrome skull and black background, under plastic. I finally came up with some real good ideas to do so, but was at the time far too lazy to carry any of them out. Maybe now that I have some more time...

The crazing around the edges probably occurred due to an interaction between the glue you used and the paint, I have had this happen on new Volvo emblems as well. Your best bet to adhere it is to use a piece of 3M VHB (Very High Bond) double sided tape... this stuff is awsome.

Two years ago, I finally bought the 245 I had wanted since childhood (my brother-in-law purchased a Corvette around the same timwe, for the same reason. Says a lot about both of us.) Okay, over the years, I have named a few cars:
90 244: Munin, a raven associated with the Norse god Odin. His purpose was memory, and boy that car has some memories and acts out if neglected or mistreated, but on the other hand, treat him well, and he is a proud trusty companion.
92 245: Named, out of necessity by my Wife... is now Bleen... a conglomoration of Blue-Green Metallic. (we kept getting our wagons mixed up)
06 XC-70: Named XC (or exe)... out of the same reason for Bleen
00 Mitsu Eclipse GS: Stun... from the looks on the faces of Mustang drivers I beat outright with a stock looking 130HP factory car. Well, she does have a few mods like a T3 turbo, but 2.4L vs. 5.0L should be a no-brainer.
79 Mercedes 280SE: Vault...safe and heavy as heck, but the real reason behind the name was that I had to empty the vault on a daily basis to keep it running. I'm talking parts bills only here!
93 Cherokee: Thumper... At first this was for its ability to go through about any and all terrain. Later, Thumper described the rod knock better than its performance!
Jaguar XKE (can't recall year... Dad's car): He named her Luigi's girlfriend... Luigi was his mechanic and he saw the car more than my Dad did! If he hadn't sold that 60's era piece of hardware, my Dad would be calling the car comfortable retirement!
I've named a few others, but the ones above are the only good ones for mixed company. There was this 68 Opel Kadet GT with rotted out floor boards, no exhaust system, and a red ant farm in the back seat....

I'm not really into names for cars, we just refer to "the 240" "the 1800" "the Duett" etc. When we had more than one 200 series it was "the turbo" "your wagon". The ES was called "the pumpkin" once in a while as it was that bright orange Volvo used in the early 70s but it didn't really stick.
I tried to name the Duett after Brynhilda from an obvous source but it scarcely had the oomph to be a Valkyrie, it ended up being named Beulah after a mule in a Heinlein story, but it's usually just "the Duett".
I do believe my cars (and others) have distinct personalities and react to mistreatment just as they do to praise and good maintenance, but they just don't seem to get names that stick.

Gold - that has lots of potential.
How about some of the gold-craving characters in Wagner's Niebelung Ring opera cycle? Fasolt and Fafnir, the Valkyries, there are many more whom I've forgotten. All Nordic names and loaded with legend.
Or you could go a similar route with the Tolkien books. Another gold-themed story, known to many folks. Naming it Frodo or Gandalf that might be pretty cool.

Hmmm.
It must be black like the night sky.
Maybe call it Skye.
I knew a Skye once, I would guess she had a Nordic background.
Blonde like young corn silk.
A friend of mine names her bricks after their color.
She drove Red for many years. She spray painted the whole car with cans of Krylon or maybe DupliColor!
Then she drove Mr. Mustard. You know, that deep mustard yellow Volvo used for a while.
Our '90 "spare" brick is burgundy color. I started a search for meaningful names of Burgundy wines or places in Burgundy, France. Theatrical characters known for drinking burgundy wine. The results were pretty obscure, nobody would get the connection. So her name is Burgie.
My first brick had to have a Nordic woman's name, so she was Sophie. International, but definitely Euro and kinda Nordic.
The next and current brick needed another Nordic name but I decided to be even-handed, just like the folks who name hurricanes, so this one is Sven. Strong and good-natured, you can always count on him.

I've been operating under the assumption that my '93 is masculine, but I guess I better consider the possibility that it isn't. Hmmm...
I had considered "Goth" or something similar because of the black - and I mean BLACK, Volvo didn't put any chrome or nothing on the last 240's - and because it came from Gothenburg. But it didn't sound quite right for some reason.
I thought about "Cash", you know, the car in black...eh, maybe not.
And after it went nameless for many months, I started thinking along the lines of the man with no name like Clint Eastwood in his spaghetti westerns. I thought about "Clint" because that's also the name of a good friend who loves my Volvos because despite being about six and a half feet tall and half as wide, he fits fine in the passenger seat. He's also German.
I don't know - this requires more thought.
BTW, how did the spray painted 240 look?

"BTW, how did the spray painted 240 look?"
Not too bad, considering it was a total DIY job on a super-low budget.
However, it was not up in the realm of an inexpensive pro job like Maaco, IMHO.
I believe she did a lot of prep work to deal with rust and maybe even dents. Gotta give her credit for that.

It’s all fun and games till some one gives one of their cars a name like.
Soda can, spare parts, refrigerator, wiring night mare, grease bucket, Ole spit and sputter or crusher time. It’s kind of like naming your cow “Hamburger” or your pig “Pork chop” This kind of name calling just hurts the cars feelings and should be avoided at all cost other wise it will leave you stranded.
240-Oole faithful aka the red Volvo
740-Old one aka the blue Volvo
960-Trouble aka the black Volvo

My '80 Honda Accord was dubbed "The Silver Bullet", 2000 Neon was Zippy as it would do 65 in 2nd gear, and my current '82 245 was named "The Green Bean" by some guys who worked for me.

As a mechanic I do not name cars, mine or the ones that I work on. I personally have always thought it was the one of the gayest things I have seen and when I click on a post and it starts out with something like "Our dearest Inga has a problem..." I will not even read the rest of the post and just move on. Just a pet peave of mine but I cannot stand that crap, it is just a machine, a bucket of bolts. The only name or titles I attach to a vehicle are not terms of endearment, more like "the oil leaking, wallet bitting, eyesore" and it goes down hill fast from there. What a ray of sunshine on an otherwise gloomy day I am, huh?

My 86 245 has always been Inga. She is Swedish, has big headlights, and since she is a 245, baby's got back... door that is.
I gave her the nickname in the early 90's and it stuck right away. When my mom could not bear to trade her in for what they offered about six years ago, I gave her a good home at my place.
