A/C chargeing pressure??? on my 1991 240 200

Bill,

I put three full cans (36 ounces, or 2.25 pounds) of 134a into an absolutely empty, evacuated 1993 system with a VOV, and the system has been working like a 21st-Century product for the past couple of weeks, including some days over 90 degrees. That's a totally new experience for me.

While filling the system, I submerged the bottom of the R134 cans in a saucepan of tap water in order to keep them from cooling too much to empty completely.

The low-side pressure at the accumulator fill port never got up to 60 psi. When the pressure began to rise near that level, the compressor cut in and dropped it back. Long before I was through, the compressor was running full time, of course. At that point, I began to modulate the valve on my manifold to keep the low-side pressure within limits I was comfortable with as the 134 entered.

After I was through fillng and had stopped the engine, the system pressure stabilized at about 65 psi -- outside air temp was about 75-80 degrees farenheit.

If the low-side pressure had gone over 65psi with the engine running, I would have been worried -- wishing I had another guage to make sure the high-pressure side didn't get beyond the lines' strength. The guidelines I've read say 40-50psi is about right, and I was able to keep it in that range as the system filled.

That's about all I know. Good luck.

You don't fill the system just by pressure. You actually add less r134 than the system's original r12 capacity--recharging the system to 85 to 90 percent of its original capacity with r134. Overcharging with r134 actually makes the system run more poorly.

I don't remember how much r12 the 240 holds; if its not in your owners manual or on a label under the hood post back and we'll try to find it.
