dashboard light - short circuit? 200 1992

The other day the dashboard lights went out (including the centre console lighting).

My car has the daytime running lights (Canadian model), so all of the lights (headlamps, parking lights, etc.) come on with the ignition.

I checked the fuses, but none were blown.

Coincidentally, once or twice the turn indicator blinked at a rapid rate -- I know that this is normally indicative of burnt out buld in one of the blinkers, but I checked both sides, front and back, and everything was ok. Now it is back to blinking "normally".

Also, when the car is off and I go to turn on the headlights, they do not come on at all (but the parking lights do).

Since there were no blown fuses, I am guessing there must be a short somewhere to the dashboard. Has anyone seen this before, or could you point me in the right direction before I go to the shop?

Cheers.

    Hi Mate!

Check the fuse contacts in the fuse box by the driver's left leg. The fuse ends and the holder get oxidized especially if you have a leak near the area.

Try rotating the fuses, or better yet use a wire brush to clean the contact surfaces of the fuses and holder, then use dielectric grease to protect the surfaces.

    Worked fine for me.

    Best of luck,

    George

I tried cleaning the connections, and they are all on fine (no loose ones).

Interestingly, when the ignition is on, the daytime running lights come on, and if the light switch is actually moved to "on", then the high/low beam settings also work.

If the ignition switch is off, and I turn the lights to "on" for PARKING, those lights come on, but if I move it all the way to include the headlamps, neither the headlamps nor the parking lights are on.

Dashboard lights not on either with the ignition or light switch.

      ???
