why wont my car idle? 200 1979

any ideas on this?
the car should go bu-bu-bu-bu-bu
but istead it goes bluh-bluh-bluh-bluh
it lopes like an over-cammed V8, but only sometimes.
ive done: head cleaned and machined, new head gask, new valve cov gask, new intake mani gask, new vac lines, air filter, spark plugs, wires, dist cap, rotor, new fuel pump, fuel filter, gas tank (unrelated incident nevermind...), let's see....... thats about it. it only does it some times, cold or hot. worn cam maybe? timing belt is 3 yrs old. #4 cyl it a bit oily. compression test fairly even and within specs (~170 psi if i remember correctly) any suggestions? thanks!

thank you to aye roll for help with fuel line prob. the fuel line is a tube within a tube and when i tightened the line the inner tube twisted and cut off fuel flow but the outer tube looked fine. oops. anyway, you were dead on!
cheers!
sasha

IMO, you have to start by measuring fuel pressure -- particularly Control Pressure. A faulty Regulator/WUR could be make a very rich mixture. Any signs of that?

Most K-jet stuff I've read strongly advocates a fuel pressure test a THE starting point, being that hydraulics is at the heart of Fuel Distributor operation.

Here is a link to the cheapest K-jet/CIS gauge setup I know of — but I see they aren't shipping till 7/22.

definetly signs of rich mixture. it failed air care today, but only the idle test, it passed the driving test no problem. thanks for the link. what is WUR? thanks

WUR is what Bosch books call the Control Pressure Regulator.

WUR stands for Warm Up Regulator, since it's initial job is to richen the mixture for cold starting and cold running. Once everything is up to temp, it's still a major factor in controlling the normal running mixture.
But the CPR/WUR doesn't sound like your problem if the car tests OK at driving speed.

Even so, I would say a fuel pressure test is a good place to start on most any K-Jet issue.
IMO, it's too basic to overall operation to ignore.
