could engine and transmission mounts be causing problems? 200

bricksters,

posted a couple of times recently concerning various problems my 89 245 auto with 250k has had in last few months. i.e. oil light coming on when shifting and other various shifting difficulties. while looking at oil sending unit wires near oil filter, i noticed not much room in there anymore and motor mount feels very spongy. mounts have never been changed since i've owned it ( 130k). i was wondering if any of these woes could be caused by the motor mount(s) failing and needing replacement? if so, any things i need to be aware of in technique ( lifting point underneath etc) other than on faq's when i change these out with oem's?

thanks,
gary c.

I find they need replacing at 80 - 90 K miles. Pretty easy to do and doesn't cost much.

has the "block of wood under oil pan" while lifting been superceded by other advice in the mount changing directions? sounds like there might be bit of disagreement among those who have done it. am i going to need to put car on stands to do this? i have great weather window of opportunity up here next few days to do this in driveway, so am anxious to get going.

      thanks, gary c.

Not on the oil pan, use the edge where it bolts to the block. That works good for me, just make sure it is secure and safe before climbing under. Do one at a time. Dan

          dan,

is there a preference to which side i should start on? any parts have to come off? and if i do the trans mount, where do i lift on that? i'm sure all this will seem easy when done, but better to know now then later.

thanks again from sunny and 70 in anchorage :),

It is easier if you remove the oil filter. I usually remove the mounts at the frame and engine. You may need to lower the trans cross member to make it a bit easier. Dan

How much room is there between the motor mount and the oil filter? Should be a least a finger width between the two. The mounts do sound like they might due for replacement if they are super soft (oil soaked). However, 240 mounts are supposed to be somewhat soft from the factory so they will break away easily in event of a collision.

I doubt the oil light coming on is due to any bad mounts. It might, however, if the wire been frayed by contact with the mount or something else and is grounding out. Long shot - Maybe if all the mounts are real bad and engine is shifting around a lot...
