Spend the bucks for at least the Chilton's manual if you are going to do this kind of work. It costs less than a tank of gas.

If you don't own a Volvo manual, try going to your public library and photocopy the section in the Chilton's or Motors Foreign car manual for your respective year. As most serious owners say, the Green manual is the best. [then why don't I own one yet?] If you are in a progressive city and have a library card, some libraries subscribe to an online auto repair database, a watered down version of what mechanics use, and you can get the info online. But you must be authenticated on the database site with a library card number. Also, I have found the IPD.com catalogs have good diagrams of the parts for various systems but not instructions. At least you will see the various sizes and be prepared with the correct size for your application. I don't believe fpcgroton.com has diagrams but I could be missing a bet.
