engine noise when coasting 120-130

I wanted to throw this question out to you all:

Following a bit of work yesterday (I had two engine mounts replaced and all the exhaust rubbers replaced), there is now a noticeably harsher note to the acceleration and the car makes more engine noise when coasting, that uuu-uuu-uuu noise characteristic of cars like Morris Minors etc, when you take your foot off the gas and coast. The car never used to make undue noise in this situation.

Has the work done brought on this extra noise and can I have something adjusted to lessen it. It's kind of ruining town driving which is at least 50% coasting. Thanks a lot,

Tom

Might want to check exhaust manifold studs 120-130

After some exhaust work on my '66, I noted a new tapping noise on warm up. The shop insisted that it was valve train related. A few months later I finally found the cause -- broken exhaust manifold stud -- last one back.

Still later I discovered that the folks who replaced the manifold studs installed a paper gasket between the exhaust manifold and downpipe. That didn't last long! The local Volvo dealer got me a proper exhaust gasket next day for less than $10.

Can you identify where the noise is coming from?

Best regards,

Joe M in WV

Problem is none of the work done was to the engine. Perhaps when you replaced the rubber rings a small crack in the exhaust system appeared - hard to see but easy to hear...especially with back pressure created by "coasting".
Did you try coasting down a hill with the engine off?

Thanks for the input so far. I should have been more specific, in that the noise isn't there when the engine is off. By coasting I meant when you take your foor off the gas as you approach a stop sign or traffic light. It sounds like its half way along the exhaust route rather than engine.

Sorry to go on about noises but I have another new one now which is like a rattle, that a child has in a pram, coming from underneath the car (and no I haven't run over any babies without realising!). It rattles for several seconds, regularly, on any surface. Seems like a fairly unique noise that one of you might recognise.

Thanks again.

Tom

Strange, why did my post have a different user, when I had logged in as normal? My computer is shared... maybe this roll'em was one of my colleagues being 'helpful'. Hmm.

Not sure what caused this, but bearings can sometimes cause whining. This would probably be heard all the time, though, not just during coasting. I'm sure others could tell you what that engine-braking noise is and how to reduce it.
