blower motor/a/c electrical gremlins?? 200

today i'm doubting the wisdom of volvo ownership...

as noted earlier in a post today, i had changed the blower motor out and as oleseahorse found, the ipd blower motor kit provides a motor with the red and black wires too short. ok, so after butt connecting longer leads i put the thing together and it worked fine. even the a/c cranked to life. i also took out the temp compensation board and used the 16 guage wire trick as noted by ken c.

today the car overheated because i didnt realize the temp gauge (sans temp board) was giving me an accurate reading. the neck of the radiator at the upper hose connection cracked and pulled over and shut down within 20 seconds.

ok, had it towed to a friend's shop, he installed new radiator, thermostat & gasket and new coolant and the temp is now reading about 8 o'clock. he topped off the r134a refrigerant (had it converted a long time ago) and temp out of the vents was a respectable 57 degrees.

ok, went to pick it up and after marvelling at the lowered operating temp, i try the a/c. blower motor switch doesnt do anything. dead. nada. so i turned blower back to off position. a moment later the a/c 10 second delay relay kicks in the compressor and lo and behold, there is a slight movement of air out of the vents and i can hear the blower motor working (like on speed nbr 1). turning the blower switch to 1-2-3-4 actually turns off the motor (the blower only works when the switch is set to the off position and with the a/c compressor working. if i shut off the a/c, the motor stops and no air out of the vents. wtf!

mechanic/friends comes over, fiddles with the switch and thinks the switch took a dump. i worry about resistor pack but he says if it was a bad resistor the blower motor should be at least working on the full power setting ('direct power bypassing the resistor'). i volunteer that maybe the blower motor is defective (but it runs says he, so it must be ok. the problem, he says, is the power running to it - therefore it must be in the switch).

tomorrow i'm going to tear out the center console and put the old switch in (i had used the new switch that was included in the ipd blower motor kit) and see what happens.

however, i'm looking to art (benstein), bob (aye roll), marty (oleseahores), ken c, don and the signigficantly talented others (you know who you are!) to come up with an answer, or at least a plan - failing that, my mechanic/friend is a former Marine sniper and he keeps his 50 cal in the shop to put bad cars out of their misery! sh*t, i gotta get a life...

    Hey Garry,

Check the blower fuse. Check it well, before you get the screwdrivers out, because it is a different fuse that powers that low speed with the AC, and the fact it runs from there guarantees your resistor and blower motor are still in good shape. That's not to say it couldn't be the switch...

Sorry to hear about the radiator meltdown-- I'm running on borrowed time there too.

art - just went outside to get the paper (it's already 80 degrees here at 0700). decided to look at fuse #3 and yep, it was deformed (not burnt, the metal strip had 'arched its back'). put in a new fuse and blower motor sprang to life and works through all speeds, with and without the a/c on. came inside and told the wife. she wants me to fly you up to long island next time i want to do something on the car. wanna do the trailing arm bushings next?

thanks to all who helped and glad it works. but there's a little voice inside me wondering why the fuse blew in the first place...which i'm trying to ignore. stay out of the heat this week!

Hi Art - you mean the black/white wire that goes from the switch to fuse #3? i remember when i was finshing the blower motor project i didnt know where that wire went and bulletproof pointed out that it while it gets buried into a wiring harness (as i had pointed out) it actually re-emerges into fuse #3. of course he was right and i connected the wire and all was well. i will check that fuse to see what's up before i take apart the center console. thanks again! brgds

    Garry,

First and foremost it's Oleseahorse....nothing to do with "oleseahores" mind you. Oleseahores is quite different.

Unfortunately, one of the issues that you will have to overcome is my lack of proper terminology, but bear with me as I think this may be your problem.

When you replaced the resistor with it's collection of, I believe four wires you should have noticed that there was a plastic female connector provided at the end of the wires. You should have also observed that the old resistor connector had additional wires that had to be inserted into the new resistor connector.

I suspect that you didn't make that change from old to new. Or at least that's what I'm guessing

I wish I could describe this better but maybe others can chime in. Possibly a picture of that connector would help as well.

I had my 17 year old helping me at this point. It took a while to figure out how to pull the connector pins apart. He was the brains of the operation at this point. Maybe you needed a 17 year old. Make me an offer

    Best of luck,

    Marty

    A place to look -

If memory serves, there is a connection between the a/c circuitry and the blower motor system that makes sure that the a/c won't kick on unless the blower is at least on #1 speed. Sounds to me that something in that area is hooked up backwards.

For instance, maybe the lead to be powered when the relay in closed is hooked to the normally closed terminal (normally = relay open).

It is the ganglion of connections between the a/c relay and switch and the blower switch.

Sorry that I don't have the Volvo Wiring Diargrams book for your car.

    Good Luck,

    Bob

thanks Marty (mis-spelling of name of inadvertant)... amd Bpb

i roger what both of what you say. it seems you both agree with my friend tony that the problem is in the switch. the only thing that puzzles me is that it worked for almost 2 weeks and then it doesnt. i know the connections in the back of the fan switch and put them in the right places but i think perhaps something has come loose (when i changed the old wires & new resistor pack wires to the new white orifice i wasnt completely happy with the lack of a 'snug fit' - anyway, trust all will be revealed when i open it up.

i'll trade you my smart mouth 15 year old for your 17 year old (either way i win because the 17 year old is only 1 year away from leaving, whereas the 15 year old has at least 2 years before he is up and out!).brgds
