What's better: 740 or 240

Okay here goes; my wife wants a newer car. We have been driving older 240's for quite awhile and we are both ready to drive what will feel like a newer car. We currently drive a '89 240. Would the same year 740 feel like it was newer than the same year 240? Will the AC system on the 740's be easier to fix than on our 240?
I am not knocking the 240, but I would like to drive a car that rides and handles a little smoother. Our 240 has all new front end and new shocks and struts. It looks like it will either be a used 740 or a used japanese car. I would like to stick with volvo for obvious reasons.
I would presume that being that the 740 is a newer series that it would also drive and handle somewhat "better."
Out here in the rust belt I am tired of the gas tanks rusting out on every 240 that I have, and I think that the 740 ones are plastic.
There was a turbo 740 for sale; if the turbo goes would it be hard to convert it to NA? I have never had a turbop before and I am somewhat hesitant to get one as I don't need any more systems to maintain.

Thanks for all of your feedback.

    What's better: 740 or 240

    Okay guy's(assumption),

I have found a '88 740 I think that I will buy this week. It has some issues that I posted under a newer thread, so if you want to read in you are all more than welcome too. I really appreciate your advice and feedback. We were looking at other makes but then really thought about it and want to try and stick with Volvo it is just that we are on such a limited budget that it is hard to do. All of your advice and support did help play a role in this decision. Thnaks.

What a delema! A really nice 92-93 240 will not rust like the older ones, but they are stable in their value.
I would skip the 700 series and go straight to the 900. After 1993, all cars had R134a gases which makes the AC easy to maintain. The 900 had limited slip differentials and galvanized body panels. Do NOT even look at the 6 cylinder models.
Consider the front wheel drivers, too. The 850, 1994-97, are very nice and reliable. I like both of my turbos.

Matter of opinion, but the japs are often considered "disposable" vehicles.
By this I mean they are issue-free for many many years and then the thin guaged body and precisely engineered mechanics (limited life - cost reductions) fail and become ready for the crusher.
The volvos (old ones) tend to be designed for continuous servicability and longer overall life span.

If you want no hastles, fun ride and cold A/C get a NEW Jap. If you cannot offord a new car, invest in a car that becomes "worth" maintaining and is in essence maintainable.

The 700/900 won't really feel newer, but they they will perform more like a car rather than a pickup. The interior is somewhat more modern, but less charming than the 200s. Their bodies are more like buicks, with less charm than the 200s also. The electronics are more hastle-free no doubt. The A/C would be better and easier to convert to r134 for sure.

    A really nice 240 outtakes a 700/900 any day, but oppositely a rusty 700/900 outtakes a rusty 200.

    That's my opinion.

      There's that Buick comment again..

It does pain me to hear this: "Their bodies are more like buicks...."

It's ok, I'm not taking it personally. ;)

I have driven both a 200 and now a 700. I loved my 86' 240 and would still have it if it weren't for rust. Personally i liked how it drove and felt on the road even though suspension was going. Now i have an 89' 700 turbo. bought it from deleware. very very very little rust. I think that when 200's start to rust they do so very rapidly whereas 700's have a lesser rust problem but tend rust in many spots in harder places (especially around the frame). At first i was skeptical about the 740 but as i drove it more and more it grew on me and i love that car now - even with turbo issues.

If you get a 700 you should plan on learning how to repair headliners, and if you get the turbo you should replace all the vaccum lines.

I definately think the 700 feels like a newer car but once you get inside you can tell the interior is old. so newer car feel than the 240 but still and older car.

all in all, stick with a volvo (for life)

P.S my a/c works fine it just needs a recharge
