Matter of opinion, but the japs are often considered "disposable" vehicles.
By this I mean they are issue-free for many many years and then the thin guaged body and precisely engineered mechanics (limited life - cost reductions) fail and become ready for the crusher.
The volvos (old ones) tend to be designed for continuous servicability and longer overall life span.
If you want no hastles, fun ride and cold A/C get a NEW Jap. If you cannot offord a new car, invest in a car that becomes "worth" maintaining and is in essence maintainable.
The 700/900 won't really feel newer, but they they will perform more like a car rather than a pickup. The interior is somewhat more modern, but less charming than the 200s. Their bodies are more like buicks, with less charm than the 200s also. The electronics are more hastle-free no doubt. The A/C would be better and easier to convert to r134 for sure.
A really nice 240 outtakes a 700/900 any day, but oppositely a rusty 700/900 outtakes a rusty 200.
That's my opinion.
