Wheel names 700

Some of the Volvo alloy wheels have names. I am familiar with Corona, Virgo, Hydra and Twist. My question is, are there any others, in particular, the 15'' 10 spoke early 760 type, the 14" original 740 type (and is there a different name for these if they are all silver or gray paint with machined face) and the 15" 16V GLE type?

Oh, like Galaxy, Gemini and Polaris to name the best of them, for 200/700/900. Then Hydra, Multi-X, Scorpius, slightly less exotic. Don't forget the terrific Titan and Volans of the 850 speedster.

Wheels! A subject near and dear to my heart. Concerning 7-series GLE rims, there is some confusion. GLE's and diesels often came with a ten spoke rim that I've always loved, have them on our '83 wifewagon. 15" that is, with straight, wide spokes. they use the stainless center cover and the interior between the spokes can be either gray or black. Black seems to be for the 16v cars, but no guarantees on that. For years I called these Nova's, and I've seen them listed this way, but about a year ago I sold a set on e-bay and someone faxed me a picture from a Volvo accessory book on them. They are actually Sirius (sp?). The Nova is the 940 rim with the short, canted spokes according to the fax.

Some, though not all, wheel options are listed here:

Some of the wheels you mentioned are the Nova (10 spoke 740T/760 I think is the one you mean), and the ugly, useless 14" Dersus for all pre-89 740GLE (standard non-turbo models).

I don't remember the name for the Dersus' big brother, the wheel found on some 86 740T and 89-90 740GLE 16V cars. They're easy to find though- most 16V cars are crusher bait these days.

FWIW all fit the 240, though a few, all 14" and the 15" Virgos, will not fit 740T or 940T with ABS brakes.

Hi Rob. Saw your post on the rims and your red/black desire. I don't know if you are willing to travel, but recently I was tipped off to a new source of used car ads, craigslist.org You might check it out. For whatever reason many of the posters are not very responsive, which is annoying. Many do not post an address or phone. However there is good along with the bad.

      Regards,

      Dave

I don't find the Dersus to be particularly ugly, though they are somewhat undersized and a pain in the a** to keep clean, especially the all-silver ones. To me, they look like something that belongs on a Lancia. The 15" version is actually less appealing, with its plainer holes. For a truly ugly wheel you have to find a set from an 89 760. These are the ones that look EXACTLY like the cheap plastic wheel covers on the 740 GL. Never a big Corona fan either--if you think the Dersus is hard to clean, the Corona is at least twice as bad, and they always seem to corrode.

On my previous 740, an 89 GL, I simply got rid of the "rubber hubcaps" and painted the steel wheels silver, which looked fine on a dark blue car. It would have been nice to have found some kind of center caps, though I never did.
