AUTO TRANS. IN PROCESS OF REPAIR - NEED FEEDBACK 200 1980

Hello,

The 1980 244, suffered from slipping 3rd. to 2nd. gear. Some colleagues suggested a stuck overdrive cable, while others saw doomsday for the auto trans.

So. I drained the bottom tray and checked the cable (which is functioning fine) but found out that the recenly replaced trans. oil filter was full of muck.

How can this be, it was even dirtier than when I replaced it 3 months ago, and the car was standing for several months before?

Could this have caused the slippage?

Anyway, now, until any of you advise - the oil tray is empty. Should I drain more oil from elsewhere and refill the whole trans. with fresh oil? Is this possible (I know about the 2 liter at a time as Sven's Maintainer said).

Waiting for your kind reply,

Gadi

did 1980 still use the 3 speed transmission? If so the upgrade to the later 4 speed in itself would be worth replacing it.

No money for replacement -

It is a 3 speed.

You are using Type F oil right?

Fluid type 200 1980

I stand corrected.
Per '80 244 owners manual from volvousa.com,
"Automatic Transmission Fluid Type F or G"

I thought Dexron III but that is wrong.

Gadi, please look in 700-900 FAQ and read procedure for changing fluid on tranny. AW30 type??? Find what type transmission that was used in your year. On FAQ first page, scroll down for Table of Contents and find Automatic Transmission.

I'm sure if you change by emptying the pan many times, and refill correctly every time, it will be good. But you would have to idle the motor or drive in between changes. I'd prefer to use the FAQ method, I know that is a good way.

OK.

Will do the complete fluid change. I have to see what type of oil they sell here.

My cars have AW70 transmissions. Maybe a different slightly procedure from what the FAQ gives for yours? I didn't look.

Anyway, for mine I change 2 qt (2 litres) every time, through the fluid cooling tube at radiator. I need to do this at least 8 times to really change all the fluid. 9 times would be better but I'm too cheap for that. The fluid looks pretty nice after about 6 times but you want to get out as much old stuff as you can.

I did some pretty good calculations. Assuming the process mixes all fluids equally inside the transmission, my cars would have 91% new fluid after 8 x 2 qt. changes. I'm sure someone can do a better calculation, or can explain some reason why mine is incorrect. However I never saw any other calc. for this before, so I'm going with what I can do.
